Question about Dell Computers & Internet

1 Answer

On many websites, I get an error window that indicates that an object on the site is not supported and that things I do at the site might not work properly. What causes this? Do I need to do something to keep it from popping up? As soon as I click on "close,' the windows disappear. They always come in two's.

What type of site and is there a movie or music with the site? Usually if there is, it is a codec issue and you need to load a codec pack with currently supported codecs. You can find some at or just search for codec packs for your operating system. Your security settings may also be causing scriptlets to not be allowed thus closing the window to protect via the command.

I installed a wierd bios on my compaq presario sr5710f desktop computer and am trying to reset the bios back to factory default. I have downloaded the bios setup file from hp's website and tried to...

Need more details on this situation. Was the Presario originally configured with Windows Vista Home Premium OS factory AND are you still running the original factory Windows Vista OS on it? I know that the original owner of my SR5710F had from the factory, Windows Vista Home Premium edition (32 bit). Compaq's website only shows 1 BIOS update available for this OS. If you try to run that executable file on any other version of Windows, you will get the error message that you described. I myself am working on being able to reflash the BIOS from a bootable CD/DVD/ or thumb drive. The executeable update to flash BIOS from Compaq's / HP's website indicates a version of 5.27. When I look at the CMOS memory, the screen reports a version of 5.31. How this happened in the life of this machine, I can only speculate. I do have the 3 dvd set which is supposed to re-image the hard drive to its factory released condition, but the load fails every time at the same place (3rd dvd, at 92% complete, with an error 1005). Compaq's / HP's web site does warn against flashing BIOS with any thing other than what the company certifies. I called Compaq tech support and their advice to me is to send in the motherboard. of which.. Im reluctant to do so as I am wanting to exhaust all the possible remedies before committing to buying a motherboard for upwards of 300.00 usd. Will stay in touch as things develop. Good Luck

When trying to connect to the internet on my Panasonic Viera TCP50VT25 I keep on getting the error 403-forbidden. Using the connection test tells me the connection is ok, yet when I press the VIERACAST...

The website you are trying to access is locking you out. It seems from what you indicated, you do have internet, but if it requires going though some portal or gateway on the Panasonic, that will often have a few settings that allow things to pass through. This should be easily found in the manual, the support on the website, or a quick email to support. It might also be something as simple as you are actually getting to the internet, accessing a site, and that site that is automatically set into the panasonic is no longer active or refuses you. Ty getting to that point and then accessing a different website like google, etc.

Which browser did you use? Firefox has a problem with some Websites try Internet Explorer. If you used IE then try but there is nothing wrong with your computer this is simply browser wars [incompatibility]. If one browser won't work with any other websites reinstall it or download another - if none work look at your anti-virus will it update?

Errors on webpage I can't open the site

The reason is that you are using Internet Explorer. The best thing you can do to enjoy the Web more and get a lot less viruses, is to not use Internet Explorer.

Install Opera or Firefox and the site should load without issues. I have been using Opera for years and it is the best browser for me, but Firefox has the advantage of being more extendable, there are lots of cool things it can do. Either one is much better than IE.

Microsoft updates

Most of the time when updates cannot be installed, is because you have installed a file that is newer than the one provided by Microsoft, or you already have the "update" and Microsoft gives you the error.

Essentially when your computer communicates with the Windows Update website. It uses TWO technologies called:
Active X - to interact with the Microsoft site. The first time you visit the Update website, using your profile, you are asked if you will accept the Windows Update Control Package (the Active X control) onto your machine.
SSL (Secure Socket Layer) - A method of data encryption used by Internet Explorer.
Now this general error message 0x800A138F, that some folks get when they visit Windows Update, has been around for a while. BUT, when the MSBlast virus was unleashed Microsoft changed a few things at the main update website. One of them was to use Akamai for additional bandwidth and this connectivity is exclusively using HTTPS (SSL) for the downloading of the update catalogue. It is since then that we have seen an escalation in the number of 0x800A138F error messages!
The following steps will help many of you... BUT
What would be REALLY helpful to anyone trying to support you, is if you go to the "Windows Update Log" and look for any "Errors". This gives a clearer indication as to the exact nature of the problem. (The 0x800A138F error message is a "General" error THE real error number is in the log. A list of possible error messages is in a table at the bottom of this page.)
The windows update log is in the following places:
C:\Windows\Windows Update.log (Win XP & Win98/Me)
C:\WINNT\Windows Update.log (Windows 2000)
Just copy and paste the above in Windows Explorer to open the log file...
