Look at the condenser coils, and make sure it is clean, and free of debris, unplug the unit for about 8 to 10 hours, and see if the evaporator is froze up,if so,it will melt, and make a mess,if the water shows up under the unit, then there is a problem with the defrost, timer,or the defrost heater,if the water shows up in the bottom of the unit,on the inside, then the drain ,in the freezer compartment is stopped up,and the panels in the freezer compartment has to be removed,to access the drain, and clean it out.Rate please,if this was at all helpful.
About a month ago, we noticed that the ice was turning into one big block in the bin, and no new ice was being made. Then we noticed that some frozen items were melting (popcicles, etc.). We cleaned the coils and cleaned the pan underneath, which was 1/4 full of water. It seemed to help a bit. Today I noticed that the pan underneath had overflowed with water, and both sides of the fridge were getting warm. I dumped the water in the pan and replaced it. I also called Kitchenaid, and they suggested that I unplug the fridge for about 5 minutes. I have just done that and will see what happens.
Well, from what I gather here, the defrost timer is stuck,it is staying on all the time, this is what keeps the evaporator coils from freezing up,and it is melting, and heating up the evaporator, the timer must be replaced to solve your problem here.On this model,I am not sure, but if it is a mechanical timer,it can be under the unit,or in the freezer panels,

Bingo! You were spot on... it was the defrost timer. Since I had your input, it was the first thing the repairman checked. That saved a lot of time spent troubleshooting, which saved in labor costs. He was in and out in about an hour. Thank you so much!
