*Solution* - Your WPA key is the password used to connect to your wireless network at home. If you don't remember your WPA key, here's a way you can check it:

- Go to a computer that's connected to your wireless.
- Go to the run command from the start menu.
- Type in "cmd" without the quotations.
- When the command prompt comes up, type in "ipconfig" without the quotations.
- Look to where it says "Default Gateway" and write that number down: that number is the IP address of your router.
- Open up your internet browser and type that number into the address bar at the top.
- Most likely, you will be prompted to enter a username and password. If you have never set one up before, the defaults for netgear routers are:

Username: admin
Password: password (For older routers, the password is 1234)

- There should be a section called "Wireless settings" or something to that affect. Click on that and you will be able to see what wireless encryption you are using (WEP, WPA, WPA2, etc) and what the password is.
- Use that password for your key.

Hey bud, did everything up to where I have to type in a user name and password to the website, problem is, I don't know them. Also (trust me this is frustrating) I think I may have the WPA key, how long should it be exactly? I know my encryption type, WEP, please help. I'm going insane.

    Hey there!

I understand how this kind of thing can be frustrating. The problem is that you say you might have the WPA key, but you know for certain that your encryption is WEP. These are 2 different kinds of router encryption used for the same thing - gaining access to the wireless. If you're talking about not knowing the password to log into the router to check your WEP password, that means that if the above defaults didn't work, you'll have to reset your router. You can reset your router from a physical reset button located on the router itself.

In lamest terms, if you're sure that your encryption type is WEP, that means you're looking for a WEP password for your internet. The WEP key's length depends on what level of "WEP bit security" you have. It can be either be 10, 26 or 58 digits long and be composed of a random generation of numbers that range from 0-9 and letters that range from A-F. If you log into your router, it will tell you from the wireless settings what your password actually is. Hope this helps, let me know if you need more clarification.

ok, I do have the 26 digit WEP key,and yeah it is compiled of random numbers and letters 0-9 a-f, and i've tried entering it into the Xbox but it does'nt seem to work. My Xbox is asking for a WPA key instead of the WEP key, does that make a difference? I'm abit reprehensive about resetting the router as I don't want to screw anything up as its not my house lol.

I have a peice of paper that tells me the wireless settings

    Network name
    Network key (WER/WPA key)
    Key provided automatically
    Key Authentication
    Data Encryption type
    Connection Type
    Key Index (which is blank)

If the Xbox is calling for a "WPA" key, that means that the primary encryption is WPA, are you making sure you are connecting to the right network? Also, don't check "key provided automatically" because you are inputting a manual key. If you put in the password and it were to say, "The key must be in-between (such and such) characters and must comprise of values A-F and 0-9", then it is calling for a WEP key, but since yours is calling for a WPA, I must assume that it's WPA encryption. I'm sorry your situation is being so difficult >.<

Hi, this is the same key you had to enter to connect your pc/laptop to the router. If your router came from your broadband provider then chances are key is on the bottom of the router.

If this helps please rate me

I dnt know my WPA passphrase for my xbox live and now i cnt connect.

Theencryption key secures your data from unauthorized access. The router's password is a Passphrase or the WEP or WPA orWPA2 encryption key. The Passphrase generates the WEP or WPA or WPA2 encryptionkey and this is in the router's wireless settings. To connect to your wireless router, configure the router'swireless settings ie SSID, plus the WPAor WPA2 encryption key and then configure wireless cards in the Xbox, laptops and orcomputers with these router's wireless settings. Then the Xbox, laptops and desktopcomputers can communicate with your wireless router.

Iam setting xbox live and it ask for wpa key wots that

This is the encryption key for your wireless router, its to stop just any one from using your wifi, it should ask for a network name, then your wpa key, when you set the router up you should have written them down, if you did not set the router up, ask the person who did, the wpa key should be something like d7d6d67d3d. if you still can't find it message me I can tell you how to change this.

Your WEP key is the key (or passcode) you entered when you (or someone) set up your wireless router. If you didn't set it you need to ask whoever set up your router.

What is a wpa key for xbox live. We have the name

Hi, WPA is Wi-FI Protected Access, this is an encryption used to secure your network, it basically is a key that your router has, your xbox360 will need to know this key for you to be able to access online play via your router.

It may ask for your network name and key make sure you input both of these..

Hope this helps
