SOURCE: MTD Lawn Tractor problem
I got the same mower, and I had the same problem when I replaced the rear drive belt today. It's probably a good idea to replace both drive belts at the same time, because of the variable diameter pulleys, if one belt is worn thinner than the other, this could change the intended ratios.
However, I have noticed after running the mower around the yard for 30 minutes, the higher gears are working better. The variable speed pulley is a clever design, it can't hurt to oil the bearings, but you probably don't want to WD40 the actual belts.
