Hello kdeg15,

If you registered your Windows 98 with Microsoft earlier, you should be able to get a key by calling their support line. Details at THIS link.

If not, post your mail address here, and I'll try to send you one...

Should you have any further questions, please feel free to post them here. Please do not assign a rating until you feel your problem is resolved. I will try my best to help you further, if need be.

If you are satisfied with my solution or have no other questions, please close the problem by assigning a FixYa! rating for my solution. I would be very grateful for your show of appreciation.

Thank you for using FIXYA!

Cheers!

    Hi,

    You can try using

    Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder v2.0.1.

The Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder is a freeware open source
utility that retrieves your Product Key (cd key) used to install Windows from
your registry. It allows you to print or save your keys for safekeeping. It
works on Windows 95, 98, ME, 2000, XP, Vista, Server 2003, Server 2008, Office
XP, Office 2003, and Office 2007 family of products. It also has a
community-updated configuration file that retrieves product keys for many other
applications. Another feature is the ability to retrieve product keys from
    unbootable Windows installations.

    Hope that helps..

    Cheers!

If you registered it you can always try calling microsoft and asking them if they have a copy of it. If not your out of luck if you no longer have your paperwork that contained the product key.

Big problem no windows 98 un-locking Key

if the windows xp isn't an upgrade from 98 then it will install on your computer over the 98 without problem, bearing in mind that all information on the disk will be lost once you format it with the disk, but if it's an upgrade disk you might have to check with your friends to see if they have the same version of 98, the other thing if the computer came with 98 installed the product key should be on the case on the back or the side is normal postioning for this altho some techs use to put in the inside of the case.
hope this helps.

I have the Windows 98 disk not have lost the key codes, I am trying to reinstall this onto a new hard drive with no operating system so I can then upgrade to windows xp, help anyone?

You don't need a windows 98 disk to install XP. It will load directly from your Cd drive. You have to set the bios to be the first boot disk. It is much easier to install XP on an empty drive than to upgrade.

Having trouble entering the product ID number for my compaq presario 1230 for Windows 98. it asks for 25 digits when is only 20 on the certificate of authenticit

Pleas ensure that you are using the correct product key for your system. Look on the bottom of the laptop for a sticker with your product key on it. If the sticker is there, then enter the key on that into your system.

If there is no sticker and you cannot find a 25-digit key with your computer's documentation, you will not be able to activate Windows. Consider trying to find an alternate copy of the Operating System, or if your finances allow, replacing the machine with something more recent.
