Question about Computers & Internet

Windows 7 install I downloaded windows 7 from microsoft,(100.00+) chose iso 32 bit x86 wind home premium, installed the zip file on an xp laptop. I extracted the file w winrar, only to find there was no iso file to burn??! Only a setup.exe which I burned to dvd. Then placed the dvd I had burned(no iso) and installed win7 home prem os by opening the dvd while it was in the cd drive of another xp os laptop. I thought this would create dual boot, but does not, only wind 7. I see now that I only have approx 18GB of space on c drive left from a 60 GB HD (because of old windows files still on c drive from xp). There is really nothing of value on the old os, its docs etc. Is there any way I can safely delete the old windows folders to increase my space on the c drive to maximum w/out the old os residual xp files taking up space. Or is this too late since I aleady installed win 7 formatted on this c drive? (60GB hard drive) t42 laptop

please read all my notes before submitting an inaccurate solution! I do not have wind 7 cd at this time, I have the install.exe file on dvd that I install by placing the disc in the optical drive then executing it> I want to delete all unnecessary old xp os files in the c drive, these are useless and taking up space. Or do I have to so the whole thing over again, this time downl another 2.5GB file (iso) then burn it to a dvd? Please read all my notes that the previous tech did not, thank you.

I found the iso file on my desktop after I extracted it a 2nd time, was able to burn to dvd w no problem. Actually the 2nd time, I used a win xp cd to delete the partition making a clean install.
And then disabled at least 25 processes then were not needed, robbing memory (used services.msc) Rt nor using 1.3GB ram, cpu is very low now, though not as low as xp. Thanks very much for your help!
I must add that you can only use One Product Key for win 7 on one Computer!

You should have run that setup.exe, it purpose is to create the iso. After it has run just burn the resulting iso. Otherwise you should just go back to MS and this time download the iso directly.
The best way is to fix your problem is to just wipe the disk completely and start all over again. Download DBaN  http://www.dban.org/ , burn the iso to a disk, boot from it and completely wipe the hard disk.

Yes , this is exactly what you must do, i said that already.

If you have done a proper install then Win 7 is now installed in C and all the files from XP are now in a folder called Windows.old . This folder - and only it - you can wipe. In any other case you should download DBaN , burn the iso to a disk, boot from it and completely wipe the hard disk. Only after that you can perform a new clean install.

BTW what you have done is called an in-place upgrade, something that is totally forbidden for a direct upgrade from XP to 7. Actually a direct upgrade in any form from XP to 7 is strongly discouraged and not supported by Microsoft.

I would repartition the drive to 2- 30 gig partitions - install xp one partition #1, install drivers and updates. put the windows 7 cd /dvd in and Make absolutely sure that you choose the “Custom (advanced)” installation option, so you're able to select the freshly created partition. Be careful, you run the risk of installing over your old operating system along with all of your data if you select the wrong partition.
After defining all configuration parameters Windows will continue on with the installation process for roughly 15-30 minutes and then prompt you for more basic input. Pat yourself on the back! You've successfully installed Windows 7 alongside your previously existing instance of Windows.
now when starting the computer you will be asked which operating system you want to start.

How to get my laptop reset to the original factory settings?

Go to the laptop maker's web site and look for a restore CD.
If you don't find one there, send them an email and explain your problem.
A Google search with the laptop make and model and the words "restore CD" might work.
Last resort is format the hard drive and re-install the Operating system.
Most laptops do not come with an OS cd, but the license key is on the bottom.
Here is a link to various Windows operating systems you can use with your CD key.
Download the appropriate Windows 7 .ISO file which includes Service Pack 1

Sounds like you are attempting to install the 64 bit version on a 32 bit PC. You will need a 32 bit install disk.
