- As I see, First of all you need to diagnose and correct the internet connection problem using the troubleshooting related to your internet connection setting.

To do that you can follow the procedures in this link.

- You should clean the temporary internet files and cache.(from the internet>tools menu) (large number of temp internet files also make starting slow.)

- You have to remove all unwanted programmes particularly the games from add remove of Cntr Panel.

- You may defragment your C drive, at time lots of fragmentation cause this problem.

- You can safely clean, repair and optimize your computer.
It will help improve your system performance without expensive hardware upgrades.

- There is a disk cleanup tool in your computer that you can use to identify the unnecessary files on your PC, and safely delete them. This procedure might be very effective if you are running out of storage space, but if you actually have a lot of disk space left, it does not actually help much.

- The spyware programs run silently in the background, and do nothing to help you. Some of them have been very well programmed, and are very hard to detect and remove. A few pieces of spyware on the computer should not usually slow it down too much. But when the amount of spyware on your computer accumulates into a large amount, there will be serious speed issues.
To remove the spyware from your computer, you will need an antispyware program. Removing them should remove the irritating popups that they cause, and also improve your computer speed. One good antispyware that I would recommend is Spybot Search and Destroy.

- As a last solution you can reinstall a clean operating system.

Hope this helps.
Waiting your comments.

Kind Regards.

Quick fix. Get rid of slow cable.
Go to Verizon FiOS if you can for the same services, but much faster and Verizon service is unparalleled.
I have DSL here where there is neither option.
Folks who have FiOS love it.

I have a dell 2400 desktop computer. I recently got FIOS and they hooked my wife's computer to their router with an ethernet cable. Can I also hook my dell up the same way?

Depends on the hardware. Is it a router or modem? Does is have extra ports in the back,

Router with extra ports, just connect new device with wire or even wireless if it has wireless.

Modem, most likey you have to buy a router.

Where can I find the maximum connection speed of my computer? I have a Dell desktop and I have Verizon Fios for my internet connection.

This might fall under the old adage, "Be careful what you wish for; you might just get it" LOL But here's your link and perhaps a learning experience if you choose to take the leap.

I have a Dell desktop with Vista windows.Later it takes very long time to start and freezes a lot. since i switched from Cable to Verizon Fios about a month ago it is gotten much worse

You would installed a lot of softwares in it. By installing more softwares and programs, they were saved in startup. They start running when you start windows. You have to disable programs from startup. You can disable programs from startup by going on Start > Run > msconfig > startup > Disable all programs. Your computer's speed is boosted.

Windows Networking Issue

FIOS and DSL use different modems and or gateway devices. Sounds like you were using a DSL gateway device with networking setup and when you moved to FIOS, the tech did not duplicate your network on your new FIOS gateway. OR you had a 3rd party router e.g. Linksys that was removed from the setup when FIOS was installed.
Either way, Verizon is who you should contact. Just tell them your network went down after you moved from DSL to FIOS. Dont mention Microsoft or Livewebtv.

I already have verizon internet"fios' how ever i want to purchas cable for my hd tv

Usually Verizon can offer HD TV over the same FIOS cable. If you call them, they can connect it to your TV for you.

If you call the cable company they can probably set up cable for you. The two shouldn't interfere with each other.
