The problem I had started with a bad car adapter, the battery of my Garmin ZUmo was completely depleted. It then went into a shut-off state which I could not reset. My motorcycle dealer had showed me how to reset it. Connect your Garmin with the A/C adapter, push on the right lower edge of your screen, and simultaniously push the power on/off button. If I would push this combination again I would set it back to factory defaults. Strangly enough I could not find this option in the manual.

Its NOT a generic problem for ALL gps devices as most TT devices have a RESET button as do quite a few others. Usually RTM tells you where it is. The XL and XLS both have them near the card slot.
Failing RTM the RTFM works.

Where is the reset button on the Tomtom xl340s

The TomTom XL 340-S uses the power button as a reset. With the unit turned off, hold down the power button for approximately 15 seconds, until the TomTom turns on. As soon as the unit turns on, release the power button. The unit is now reset.

My Tomtom XL won't turn on. No reset button apparent

The reset button is on the bottom of your device. On my older model XL it is just above the sd card slot. If you have the newer model XL 330 then you have to hold down the on/off switch for 20 seconds to do a reboot. If you have not used it in a while let it charge for 30 monutes before doing a reset.
Hope this helps
