I've just installed the WRT160N wireless router. My MacbookPro picked up the signal just fine, but my Dell XP desktop won't connect. Do I need to change the IP address on the Dell? Can I find it on the Mac somewhere? Or is there anywhere I can look on the local area connection PC? Thanks.

the message is coming from your pc, it means that its not getting a connection. You must give more information. Brand and model of your modem, how your computer is connected to your modem, how many computers are connected to the modem.

1.the ip address on the modem is a static ip from your isp but make sure that the compuer ip is in specification of the isp ordained by your isp except you are using dhcp for ip assignment.

2.check your connection cables for consistency

I can't reset a 169 series IP address on my 4600C in order to direct connect to a cable modem (and internet).

Provided there is no hardware problems, this issue is fairly easy to resolve.
  1. Completely shutdown the system
  2. Unplug power to the cable modem.
  3. Wait 3 minutes (This allows the temp memory of the cable modem to scrub)
  4. power on the cable modem, let it reset (Takes about a minute)
  5. boot the system.
Normally this will force the cable modem to renew the MAC address of the device connected and give you a valid IP address.
If you still have an APIPA address, try right clicking the local area connection ICON and click REPAIR
If still no connection, reboot computer in safe mode w/networking and try again. If you get a connection then the issue is software (Firewall, Virus, Malware)
If you still are not getting a valid IP address, check your cabling and connection (Replace cable with a known good one if available) or try a different network card.

Cant connect laptop to cable modem

OK based on the IP address you've given me I can tell that your network card is not getting an IP from the cable modem. The IP you have there is automatically assigned by windows in the absence of a proper DHCP server.

You have 2 options now you can try to manually assign the IP address and connect to the modem or if u have the CD that came with it you can connect to it using a USB connection (most modems have a usb port) and configure the modem manually to give you an IP or at least see what address range it is using and configure your PC to suit.

If you don't have the CD and USB and you want to manually assign an IP address to your PC most modems tend to use 1 of 3 address, you can try either:
192.168.1.1
192.168.0.1
10.0.0.1
to connect to the modem (if you use a ping command from the command prompt with any of the above addresses the one that replies is the ip of ur modem)

and manually configure your PC network card with either
192.168.1.25
192.168.1.25
10.0.0.25

Its a little technical i know but you should be able to do it
Hope this helps you.

If this doesn't work we can try a "tracert" command next to see if we can determine the modem IP

Error in Connecting

without the modem plugged into the troubled computer, go to start -> run.

Type cmd and hit enter. A black window screen will come up. Type ipconfig and hit enter. Without the modem plugged in, your ip address should read 0.0.0.0. If not, you have a manual ip address and need to change it to auto.

To change ip address to auto, (in windows xp) go to start -> control panel, or start -> settings -> control panel.

Double click network connections. Look for your local area connection, right click and click on properties.

A window should popup. Scroll down the list to Internet Protocol and click properties again. Make sure IP address and DNS are both set to automatic.

Wireless set up problem - no gateway ip or limited connectivity

Connect using Lan Cable
be sure to enable java on your Browser.
Use ONLY IE: some router refuse other browser.
SET your PC on a static IP address on SAME subnet as your router (but of course different IP).
If subnet concept is NOT clear to just just ask here.
When connected with router (on Lan Cable) check every setting (WPA-PSK) TKIP key, Broadcast / Channel etc.
You can also disable every WLAN protection and restore it later.
Activate WLAN connection WHEN you are STILL connected.
Last but not least: SET your DNS IP address = your gateway IP (router)

sounds like you need to reenter the password/key
go to network connections and disconnect from it. then try to reconnect after the refreshes.
is it asking for a password/key?

Cant go online with my dell insperation 1000 it says low or no connectivity was wondering if there was a way to do a system restore to solve the problem ..getting real frustrated

Sure you can try system restore and restore it to the day before the problem occurred but if it has been a while then it is possible that there may not be a restore point available to restore it to
And if that is the case then open "network connections" in the control panel and "right click" your connection that says limited or no connectivity and select "status" from the drop down menu then click the "support" tab on top and where it says "IP Address" look to see if it starts with a 169.xxx.xxx.xxx number and if it does start with 169 then that means that your computer was unable to acquire an IP address from your router or modem and it assigned itself a default machine address of 169.xxx.xxx.xxx (xxx is just space filler for numbers they could be different numbers) And so if it does say 169 then click the repair button and it will try to acquire a new address and if it is still unable to acquire an address and you end up with a 169 number again then if you have a router go over to the router and unplug the power cord for 10 seconds and plug it back in and then click repair again and it should work.

Most routers assign an IP address that starts with a 192.168

if you don’t have a router and your modem is plugged directly into your computer then try unplugging the modem and plugging it back in but wait for the modem to initialize (boot-up) all the way (you will know when all of the lights on the modem are on) before clicking repair button.

if none of the above helps then let me know and ill take you to the next step in fixing the problem
