Bring your laptop under sunlight. If you look very closely and can see your screen then your backlight went out. Otherwise there might be a loose/broken connection to your lcd.
I see that your Thinkpad T400 machine is locked and you are unable to make use of the machine.
to be able to unlock the machine power the system on once turned ON you will see a Lock icon on the center of the screen just press and hold down the FN key for at least 5-7 seconds or if possible untill the lock icons shows that it is unlocked.
On the 5240 similar model you press the right hand navigation button on the back of the camera. It has a flash symbol engraved on it but not very clear on mine. The screen goes blank as if nothing happens but it is charging the flash and with fresh batteries will come back in 5sec or so. Then when you shoot it will flash, and there will be a flash symbol showing on the screen.....Press again to alter to fixed rather than auto flash, and again to turn off.
it may happen that your extetnal (VGA Display) is enabled, this will disable your LCD Display.
just press Fn key and look function keys where monitor symbol is drawn ( that is F7 or F8 key. (turn on laptop then press Fn + F8/F7)
Somkewhere after submitting the problem, I read a blog that instructed to press all five of the small buttons in the circle on the back while turning on the power. I took me twice and regained the viewfinder. They also had written that it may take a few times.
Power down, remove the battery, remove the power plug. Hold down the power button for at least 30 seconds. Remove and reinstall the memory module(s). Re install the power plug and try to power back up and see if it works. If it does, reinstall the battery ad you're done. If not, get back to me for some more ideas and further diagnosis. i had the same issue when my phone got slightly wet. try taking everything apart (sim card, battery, back). let them dry out for a little bit then after like a day or two put the phone back together. turn it on it will be a white screen for a little bit but give it like 2 or 3 mins and if should come back. I did this for my phone cuz i really needed the pictures off it and it worked! hopefully if will work for you too. GOOD LUCK!
i have one too and it always turns itself off at least 15 times a day and a red light comes on at the back and the screen is blank. It hangs up on people half way through phone calls, and tells me i have messages wich i don't and comes up with blank messages which i can't delete!! Today it has done the exact same thing again but it has been frozen for over 3hours i have tried taking the battery out and nothing works :(
