After 3yrs the cpu was formatted and reloaded but when the hp psc 1315 printer original cd was loaded. It goes through all the phases but when it reaches 96% on the installation(Last item # 4), it just gives up. every time the cpu is switched on it goes thru the installation phase but with the same result. Do you have your printer connected by a USB port? Do you have several USB items on your system? (Printer, mouse, keyboard, etc etc) It is possible that your USB ports are overloaded and cannot process the information. That's what the USB hubs are for - those little ports that you can get for as cheaply as five bucks some places, up to big bucks for the heavy duty ones.... you can plug up to four USB items into the hub, then only ONE USB plug goes into your processor.

I am really not sure if that is the problem for you, but worth a try. Also, it is possible that the USB port you have it in is wearing out - try another one if your machine has them available. They do die.... if it powers up, it is likely that the port isn't dead, so I am thinking that it is just too much for your machine to process, and it is ignoring all other requests to that port.

(PS - when the 1315 dies, it is not worth resuscitating! It isn't HP's finest moment, and was their earlier attempt at an all-in-one. I found it to be more hassles than it was worth!)

Won't scan but prints and copies

turn off computer. turn on - does a test page print? You need to unplug the USB cable from the printer and put the test page on the scanner - push scan. This should scan the page. Turn off computer, hook USB back up. Try to scan whatever you are scanning.
Hope that helps!

Instead of pressing the start button to print, you need to press the small ON/OFF button. The start button works to copy/scan. But to print, you will need to turn the printer on first. Once the printer is on, the computer should recognize it fine and allow you to print from your applications.

Scanned documents are very light

I have found that when scanning b/w documents, its helpful to start with a black and white copy, not a grayscale, pen written, or printed form a printer in grayscale mode copy, but a true black and white on the copier or fax copy. The scanner doesnt read shades of black so well and when scanning multiple page documents, my pixma tends to scan in lightly. I havent found a piece of software to do just this, batch darken what has been scanned (at least not for free). Copying before scanning is the work around. Hope this helps everyone who's had this problem. It also doesnt hurt to darken what your scanning down a notch when copying

Can't get the printer to print

Cycle power including unplugging AC cord from printer.

If you cannot copy (scan) after power on, the printer is bad.
You should be able to copy (scan) after printer is turned on and initializes (It will say "COPY / 100%").
