Question about HP Photosmart M417 Digital Camera

1 Answer

Half of the buttons don't work

The zoom in/out buttons stopped working as well as some menu features. When these buttons are pushed, the camera make a little sound just like it did when they worked but nothing happens. What is interesting, is that when the back cover is removed, the button contacts work fine. I thought maybe the button 'points' were worn so added more tape to contacts which had no effect. Looked for a short with the cover, but could no find. This is my second hp camera and will be my last as they both have only lasted a year and hp seems to care less.

Hi, my M417 acted the same way. Would only power on and then any button would only make a little "tick" sound. I also tried taking the case off and my camera worked as well. What I spotted was that the switches are little metal domes which pop down in the center when the plastic button is pressed to make a connection between metal traces on the circuit board. The little domes are not attached to the board but are only held in place and located by some thick clear tape over the board. A couple of my switch domes had "drifted" out of position and so when in the case they had enough pressure for their edges to be making contact at all times so they were always on. I lifted the tape with a small knife blade and slid the domes back to where they belonged and now the camera is back to normal!

Zoom feature not working

Hi,

So you're pressing the Zoom button but it has no effect, am i correct?

There can be 2 issues - small (dust/moisture), not small(inside button gone bad).

Small Issue: Keep the camera in sunlight(not very hot) for a while. (not loaded). Wipe off with clean lint-free cotton cloth. Keep it again in sunlight for a while. If moisture is the issue then it should go off, though i have seen in some cases it took 3-4 days and suddenly it started working.

If still no response from Zoom then the internal zoom small button has gone bad and needs to be replaced. Send it for repairs.

Hi,

Your camera has a zoom failure that can not reset by pushing menu buttons or else. Ask your local Sony repaircenter.

How to use the Zoom

I assume you mean when pressing the W or T buttons the zoom feature does not work. Try to reset the camera to the factory default settings and this should enable the zoom feature to work again. To do this go to Ok button and then to Mode Menu - then to Setup tab and then right arrow to Reset. hit the right arrow and you will see Reset Yes or No. Highlight Yes and press Ok. Camera should be in factory settings and zoom option will function.

LCD Screen stopped working on camera.

Have you tried the 'Menu' button? If you've turned off the 'Review' feature in the settings menu, your LCD screen won't show anything unless the 'Menu' button is pressed. If it doesn't come on when you push 'Menu' with a charged battery installed, your camera will need to be serviced.

Dsc-N2 Buttons are mulfunctioning.

Its possible the button board under the rear case has been shifted or is malfunctioning. You can try to remove the back case and see if you can realign, or reset your camera's button board. If this doesn't work, there are several online companies that can help -
DarnToothySam.com has several repair estimate opportunities, and is pretty reasonable for the price.

Canon SD550 Digital Zoom Not Working

Digital Zoom is best ignored in any camera it simply blows up a section of an image already taken, You can do that far better with an image editor in the computer. As for the Optical Zoom - it does indeed seem to be repair time- As it is only a year and half old- may be Canin will be sympathetic and offer a cheap swap out.

The SMART ZOOM is not working - doesnt either come up in SET UP menu?

I fixed my problem myself. Simply read the top of the camera1.gif where it says TO USE SMART ZOOM SET IMAGE SIZE TO LESS THAN 2.8M
Then go to the very bottom button on your camera (there are three) and press it and reset your image size. Then your zoom will work.
Problem solved.
