Question about Meade TeleStar AZ-S Telescope

1 Answer

I have a Meade telestar 114mm reflector. F=1000 f/8.8. There is what I believe is a correcting lense element located at the bottom end of the focuser tube that has come loose. I need to know which side of this corrector faces the eyepiece and its mounting depth from the end of the focuser tube.

That is called a diagonal.. It slips all the way into the focuser, then the screws are tightened to hold it there.

The eyepiece then goes into the diagonal.

That's a corrector lens actually, what you got is what is known also as a "bird jones" have a spherical primary mirror, the corrector makes it possible for you to get a high f value with a short tube..the advatages are a...a short
alas..there are many draw backs with this type of scope, I own 2 and they are a pleasure as a grab and go and provide decent views for what they are.
You will haqve to guess which way is up unfortunately, ..could be worse..just try it one way, then another way if the view is wrong!
also..the only way to properly collimate this type of scxope is with that corrector out..and then placed back in after collimating..just tought I'd through that in for you.

I need a manual for operating the Telestar DS-114. I want to teach my class how to use the computer driver.

All the manuals are on the Meade website here:

You can control a Meade scope using several different planetarium programs if you have the correct Meade cable.

Stellarium, and Cartes du Ciel both can control the scope. If you have a real serial port on your computer you can use the Meade cable and plug in to the bottom of the hand controller.

If your computer does not have serial ports then you must buy a USB to Serial adapter cable. Keyspan is a good brand.

Which end toward moon ,do not see anything

You never said what TYPE of telescope you own. If this is a reflector style the end with the FOCUSER is the UP end. The mirror is on the bottom.

Do not know how to get black cover off of lense

First are you sure you have the CORRECT end of the scope pointed toward the sky? On a reflector type telescope that uses mirrors, the focuser is on the side of the tube on the UP end of the telescope. The mirror is in the bottom.

Mose caps simply pop off, others unscrew. You may be trying to remove the BOTTOM mirror!

I picked up a used Meade 114 EQ AS on the off

First go to Meade's manual web site -- look under the REFLECTOR heading and download a manual. Here:

Second-- It's NOT ASTROLOGY! It's Astronomy!

Astrology is completely fake and superstitious belief that the planets and stars affect your life!

The MIRROR is on the bottom of the telescope- this is called a REFLECTOR style telescope. The focuser is on the TOP (side) of the telescope. Make sure the focuser end is UP and the mirror is on the bottom pointed toward the GROUND.

You will not find a manual for that small REFLECTOR style telescope. However the picture above-- that you show in your question shows the telescope mounted BACKWARDS actually pointed toward the ground!

Apparently FIXYA also does not know how to set up a reflector style telescope. The eyepiece and focuser end is on the UP end of the telescope with the mirror on the bottom end of the telescope.

Here is a manual for a MEADE brand telescope probably very similar to your telescope.

I need a manual for tasco 49114500

You will not find a manual for those small reflector telescopes. However they all assemble and are used in the same way.

Meade maintains a web site with all of there assembly and use manuals. Look under the 4.5 inch REFLECTOR header for one similar to your telescope.

By the way this is a REFLECTOR with a mirror in the bottom. of the telescope. The FOCUSER end is pointed UP. Read my tips on my profile page.

Here is the link to the Meade manuals--

How do you remove the dust cover-- model40-114675 tasco luminova

Believe it or not the PICTURE in your question shows the scope mounted UPSIDE DOWN. Guess Fixya does not know which way to point it!

Your scope should be setup like this picture on the Meade manual web site:

Notice both the focuser and the finder scope are on the end of the scope POINTING UP toward the sky. The lens cap simple pops off or unscrews.
