Hi wa33ban2hart

Question: "Some letters on my keyboard result in the wrong character. This problem showed up weeks after purchase. Initially it was working fine".

You've done unbelievably well to type an error-free, letter-perfect question, despite the character confusion.

This is a very strange problem to have on a desktop keyboard (Dynex Keyboard and Mouse), since the way to achieve the above sentence as you have written it, is to use the Fn and NumLk keys, on a laptop keyboard, to enable buttons with multiple functions to print their alternative characters designated to them.

Desktop keyboards do not usually have Fn keys and the NumLk key on a desktop keyboard locks and unlocks the Number Pad on the right of the keyboard, which usually has no alternative letter values on its keys.

Solution: Press and hold the Fn (Function) key on your keyboard > press the NumLk (Number Lock) key (usually F10, F11 or F12) > release both keys > test keys J, K, L, U, I, O etc. again.

That should resolve your problem.

I hope this helps.

M and O key generate wrong character keyboard or keyboard encoder? Characters generated 0 and 6

This is usually caused by the FN LOCK key being stuck. You probably also have the U, I, J and K keys behaving funny and believing they're a numeric keypad.

Try clicking two or three times both shift, the FN key, NumLock key and, just in case, the Ctrl key. Also try pressing Alt-O and Alt-M or Fn-O or Fn-Alt-O and see if that gets you back the "O" key.

If only the M and O keys behave this way, though, it looks more like a keyboard driver problem; reinstalling the driver (or selecting a different keyboard, such as French one, and then back the normal keyboard again) might fix it.

My toshiba laptop is typing wrong characters but my wireless tevion keyboard is o k. Is there a solution to this ?

Sounds like the laptop keyboard went bad and thats why its typing wrong characters. Best way to verify this is to use a USB keyboard on the laptop, if the USB keyboard is typing the correct keys then you know the laptop keyboard is bad. If the USB keyboard is typing the wrong keys as well then you know its a setting in windows that is causing the keys to type wrong characters.

Asus X58Cseries with Windows Vista Basic has $ sign on 4 key but no pound sign. Any way of getting it? If not, I can live with it but would like to know either way.Cheers, Linda.

I'm an Asus X58C user in the UK and my keyboard is the same. I've not found an easy solution. The only way I can insert a £ character is this. Place your coursor where you want the character. Turn Numbers Lock on using the blue Fn and NumLk keys. Hold down the Alt key and then using the blue numbers keys type 0163. Release the Alt key and the £ character will appear. Turn Numbers Lock off using the blue Fn and NumLk keys again. Its laborious but it works, its how I typed it here. I also found out that if you hold down Ctrl and Alt and then press the 4 key, you type the euro character €. Hope this helps
