1. Make sure to use the exact upper/lower case as stated in the manual. The password is usually case sensitive but the username may be either, depending on the vendor's implementation. In doubt, make sure they are identical as in the manual.

2. You may have received a router with a pre-existing configuration. Look for the "Factory reset" feature in your manual. Once the reset is done, you should be able to connect using the default username and password.

What is the exact brand and model of your router?

  • Jocelyn Viau
    Jocelyn Viau Apr 21, 2008

Since I don't know much about your network setup, I am assuming nothing. Please try this:

    1. Disconnect the power cord from your router

    2. Open a command prompt on your PC (Start->Run, type "CMD")

    3. Type PING 192.168.1.1

Do you get "Reply from..." or "Time out..."?

If you get "Reply from..." it means that your have another device on your network that is already using the IP address 192.168.1.1. So, it also means than you were hitting this other device instead of the router you are talking about here.

How to password protect my wireless router

Open INTERNET EXPLORER and. In the URL address field, enter the IP address for your wireless router ( the DEFAULT GATEWAY. This information should be contained in your router's manual. If you cannot find it, enter "198.168.1.1" as the address. This is usually the default IP address for most routers.do not type "www" just the number
Enter the username and password for your router. This should also be supplied in the router's manual. If you don't have this information, go to routerpasswords.com and find the brand and model of your router. This site lists the default login information for most wireless routers you can try "ADMIN" for user name and "PASSWORD" for passsword.
You should now be able to see your wireless router settings. You can configure your network ports, as well as SSID (wireless network name) and passwords.

If this was helpful, please indicate so, if not -comment back so we can dig further to resolve this
