Hello leonardhobbs,

If you know the make and model of your Network Card, you can download the drivers from HERE or HERE, or you can do a google search.

You can find the make and model by going to your device manager. This is how (assuming you have XP):
START>CONTROL PANEL (make sure you choose classic view from the left pane)>SYSTEM>HARDWARE TAB>DEVICE MANAGER.

If you connect through a dial-up, click on the + next to 'Modem' to find out the make and model of the modem.

If you connect via cable, then click the + next to 'Network Adapters' to find out the make and model of the network card.
Hope this helps...

Should you have any further questions, please feel free to post them here. Please do not assign a rating until you feel your problem is resolved. I will try my best to help you further, if need be.

Have you got a list of the hardware in your machine. If not is it a prebuilt system like a Dell or HP. If it is and youve got a model number then go to their website. If not its time to open up the machine and try to identify the components. The main ones are Graphics. Sound. Wifi or Lan. Motherboard. Some of these may be on the motherboard in which case youll find the drivers on the Mobo website. Send me any info you have.

Try running the cd that came with the router again, since you reinstalled windows, the configurations for the router have been lost. If this doesn't help let us know and we'll work on it from there.. good luck!

Reinstall windows xp to laptop now cant connect to the internet

Hi there.
You may have to use a keyboard toggle command, hold down Fn and if you can see a wireless icon on one of the F keys press it.
Hopefully the wireless will activate and connect.
If you can't see the keys post back with the make and model of the laptop.

Good luck and thanks for using Fixya!!

Ibought a second hand acer 5610z from a colleague he cant remember admin password i cant change user name i can access computer but i want to change the admin/owners name

There is a way of resetting the administrator password.
You need to use a so-called 'emergency boot cd' which uses a little piece of software to check and reset the password on the machine.

Two of those tools can be found here:
http://ebcd.pcministry.com/
and
http://home.eunet.no/pnordahl/ntpasswd/cd080526.zip

give it a go.

If still unsuccessful, try contacting Acer for the Restore cd/dvd if you don't have it, and do a clean reinstall of the machine. Or use a Windows XP OEM disk of the same kind (Home/Professional) and use the OEM key on the sticker on the bottom of the PC to do a clean reinstall. The last possibility doesn't install all drivers, so you'll have to download and install them from the Acer website. Don't forget: no drivers = no internet connection on the pc, so first of all download the drivers, put them on a USB stick or cd, and then reinstall the machine...

Windows Xp

In addition to installing the operating system (Windows XP) you will need to install the drivers for the system.  If you system is a Dell Dimension 1100 you can get the drivers from this link:
http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&ServiceTag=&SystemID=DIM_CEL_1100&os=WW1&osl=en&catid=&impid=

Driver installation order is:
Desktop system software (R121089.exe) Intel Chipset Utility (R96614.exe) Intel Video Driver (R104515.exe) Audio Driver (R105155.exe) Network Driver (R105786.exe) Modem Driver (R133743.exe or R73044.exe)
Once you have all the drivers installed, then you can install your applications and configure your internet connection.

Ok, my laptop has xp home as its operating system and i am trying to install a linksys wireless card without the software and without any way to connect to the internet due to my friend apple comp. not...

Use another computer to go to linksys.com and download the drivers to a USB stick, CD, or floppy. Apple can create disks or floppies that XP can read.

If you can't get to the internet, how did you post this message?

Driver problems

JPWatson, This link will take you to the drivers for your Dimension 4600 with Windows XP: http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/devices.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&SystemID=DIM_P4_4600&os=WW1&osl=EN As far as the PC showing you already have a connection I would ignore that for now. Just download the appropriate drivers from this Dell page including the network interface card drivers and install them first. After you have rebooted and verified that the hardware devices are working correctly then start troubleshooting your Internet connection if it is still necessary. Let us know if you have any other questions and please don?t forget to rate this post.
