Question about Kenmore 80809 Microwave Oven

Open Question

Kenmore Mircohood model# 721.80803401 Interior bulb is blown after 5 years of use. Manual says to replace with standard 35W halogen bulb. I bought one from home depot and tried to replace it. The bulb doesn't fit properly in the holder. It turns on by pushing a little bit, but as soon as you leave it, it turns off. Verified that the bulb looked exactly same as the original bulb, but still doesn't work. So far I have broken two replacement bulbs in the process.

SOURCE: Kenmore microwave bulb issues

We see this a lot. The problem is on the control panel, which we regularly repair nationwide for $39.95 postpaid.

This light failure often occurs when a bulb goes out and the filament shorts, or when the bulbs are removed or installed without first unplugging the oven from the power line. Either can cause such a failure on the controller.

This can often also affect the exhaust fan operation, too. The lights and fan can be inoperable or stuck on too.

Details of our service and critical safety information and disassembly information is at our site, and our link is at our listing here on FixYa: http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk

SOURCE: Internal light does not come on

I found that by tapping the control panel, the internal light would flash. I opened the control panel and started tapping on circuit board components until I found one that seemed to consistently make the light flash. I resoldered the pins on the loose component and this completely solved the problem.

SOURCE: Remove Kenmore Mod. # 5648598601 from wall.

A lot of those you can replace the bulb without taking it down. There should be screws at the top that lossen up the vent in the front. Remove the vent, might have to open the door and slide it to the left (a little latch) then you should see a filter that just comes out and behind that is the bulb. I would try that before taking it down Forgot to mention that in the other e-mail.

  1. Light bulbIf your microwave light bulb is not working, perhaps it has blown. The first step is to replace the bulb and power on the microwave. If this does not correct the issue, the next step is to check the socket and wiring to verify if that is the problem.
  2. Light bulb socket & main control boardIf your microwave light bulb is not working after the installation of a new bulb, check the light socket as well as the wiring to ensure they are properly operating. If these sources are functioning properly, the next step is to check for a faulty control board as a possible root cause to your microwave light bulb malfunction.

Kenmore elite microwave convection 721.67903 light bulb

27oct: BKOK, replacing the light bulb is not simple, and requires a T15 security bit. Our microwave bulb blew this week, and sears on-line was not helpful, so I took the cover off and removed the bulb and the filament is blown. Here is what you need to do. Sorry, it's not easy. 1) remove the cover - this has 3 standard black phillips head screws, 2 on one side and 1 on the other. Then, there are 4 standard silver phillips heads on the back, plus two size 15 Torx screws that require a security bit to remove. 2) remove the 3 sided cover by prying the bottom and then pushing the cover towards the back of the unit to remove the latch keeping the cover secure to the front of the machine. 3) Now, there is a wiring diagram on the cover, use this to locate the bulb, but I will tell you it is on the top of the unit near the control panel. The white plastic connector has 4 wires going into it... Red, Yellow, Brown and Black. The bulb is secured with one screw and permanently attached to a trapazoidal base. The markings on my bulb say KEI, Korea, 125V,30W. 4) Remove the screw and lift the bulb assembly out and see if the filament is blown. The bulb is clear and so it's easy to see the filament. 5) I'm gonna go to local repair shop to see if they have replacements, but I usually go to AppliancePartsPro. They do have this bulb listed for under $5. , which is ok, but I hate paying shipping on such a small piece. Maybe I'll buy some other stuff. Good luck, it's not easy, and not a easy do-it-yourself bulb replacement. But if you are mechanically and electrically competant, it's not bad. But seriously, this is a lot of work to replace a light bulb. I'll take a picture and post that as well

How do you change interior 20 w lamp?

remove the 3 screws on the vent above the door. Next unplug the oven from the power source.Next you will see a single silver screw above the control panel..remove it and slide the control panel upward and out. This will give you access to the lamp socket...turn it left or right and pull slightly ...you can now unscrew and replace the bulb....It was my exp that the lamp got loose in the socket from slamming the door after about a year, and I only had to tighten the bulb..Hope this solves the problem...Jerry

GE microwave interior light bulb replacement.

Your post has two distinct model numbers shown, so it's hard to be precise, but I'll try my best.

You can usually find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here: http://tinyurl.com/gv383

I have a diagram at my site which helps you find & replace many GE cooktop and cavity light bulbs. Other models are similar. It's at
http://207.234.249.73/mwd/ge_lamp_replacement.jpg

Always unplug a microwave before removing or installing any bulbs!

If it's an over the range type, remove the vent grille across the top and see if bulbs can be accessed there.

There may be a panel on the bottom covering the light(s), too.

If not, chances are you'll have to remove it from the wall, then remove the outer cover.

Many models use halogen lamps. You must not touch the new one with your bare skin, as the oils will shorten the bulb life.

If yours is an Advantium type, the following instructable should help: http://www.instructables.com/id/SZFF4WSF44XYT8X/?comments=all

Kenmore Microwave 721.66319 500 Light buld gone out - now what?

First of all, since this will involve disassembly, we have *critical* safety & disassembly info at our site in our listing here on FixYa: http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk

You can find helpful exploded view diagrams for your Kenmore model here: http://www.searspartsdirect.com

Enter your model number as 721.66319500.

The light bulb is shown in the "LATCH BOARD PARTS" diagram and it's located in the area of the door switches.

Manufacturers used to include access panels in the rear or side so you could easily change the bulb. That exposed the customer to 110V connectors, and that posed a real liability threat, so they stopped using them.

You now must generally remove the outer cover to replace the bulb.

It's best not to touch the bulb with bare skin, as the oils can shorten thee bulb's life. And I recommend a high quality bulb from places like Home Depot, instead of cheap types from the grocery store.

Interior Light

The interior oven light can be accessed in the following way:
1.Open door and remove the top grill via the 2 screws along the top edge.
2. In the interior light will be under metal plate with fasten by single screw. The halogen bulb is rated at 120V 20watt. Looks like a G-8 bulb with 8mm pin spacing with o.a.l. 1-5/8" long

Get these bulbs cheap at http://www.1000bulbs.com/120-130-Volt-G8-Base-Halogen-Light-Bulbs/

Flash and Bang on Closing Door

Since you know that the bulb is blown that needs replaced. I would go ahead and replace the bulb and see if it works. I doubt that it will. If not unplug the unit and remove the exterior case. Locate the secondary fuse and replace it with the same size and rating. Plug in and try but be prepared as it may do the same thing again. I am not sure what you mean by 'lay up' your unit. If it was not running (heating) it should not be the magnatron. Sounds like the bulb blew taking out the fuse which would cause the other problems you described following the flash. Good luck.

Replacing interior light bulb in m/n 63694

On many recent models, it is necessary to remove the mircowave from the wall, then remove the cover to change the cavity bulb. They suggest that only an authoirzed servider replace them, in order to avoid liability. You can enter your actual, full model number (63694 is not enough) and get helpful exploded view drawings and order parts at http://www3.sears.com (the three is correct). Do not handle the bulbs with bare skin, it will shorten their lives. Use a clean dry cloth or gloves.
