It sounds like you are going to have to pay for the service call, since all of the options require a trained technician.
My best guess is a burned out compressor motor. This happened to me a while back. If the coils get dirty, they do not cool effectively, and that makes the compressor work harder. The coils are usually located at the bottom in the front, behind the grill below the doors. You can and should clean them once a year at least.
The compressor and thermostat can also cause the problem.
Call a repairman and let them diagnose the actual problem and fix it. The cost of repairs should be between $70 an $120
