This mustn't be your windows problem [it's possible, but it is secondary], this must be your External Hard drive problem. First of all try to connect it on another usb port, or if possible, use another usb cable.

This happens when infected by spyware or virus, and sometimes it could also be bad usb connector problem. To confirm this, please try it on another system. If the same problem persists on another problem, I would suggest you to run a full antivirus scan on the external hard drive using an updated antivirus.

If that doesn't help, you better format it. That's the best solution, but you need to backup the files which are saved on the drive before you format it. It may take time but it's the safest way to get rid of this problem.

There's another possibility that your system has been infected with virus. You also need to run a full system scan and assure that there's no spyware or virus infecting your system.
If the problem even after doing all these, then the problem is with the external hard drive. Maybe internal problem or maybe bad connectors or maybe bad contact points. Clean the interfaces properly (connectors) with alcohol using a soft brush or cotton, or similar objects.

Good luck.

Thanks for using FixYa.

How do I use my WD hard drive to store files so I can free up space on my laptop hard drive?

Hi:
That's an easy task:
1) Plug your Hd to your laptop and wait until the laptop recognize it as a new drive and assign a new letter to it. If you have a disc use it if your laptop ask for it.
2) Copy all files you want to transfer to the new HD and paste them on it.
That's it.

How do I disconnect (uninstall) a WD External Hard Drive from my computer? I am using a WD 3200AAK WD External Hard Drive and want to install a 1 TB WD External Hard Drive. I would like to use the old one...

External hard drives don't need any program installed on your computer to run. Your operating system Windows, Linux should handle it as soon as you plug the usb in your computer. The programs included in your WD external hard drive are tools to backup your data.

If you try to hook up your hard drive to a Windows prior to XP, maybe your computer will not handle it.

It is always safer to safely remove your drive using the green arrow icon in the lower right corner of your screen. This way, the drive is shut down properly and you minimize chances of fails when you plug it again on another computer.

Hope this helps!

Windows -Delayed write failed. Windows was unable to save all the data for the file D:\$MFT

You've got a "hardware" problem with the disk-drive. Windows cannot write an updated 'MFT' ("Master File Table") to reflect files that you have added/deleted/updated on the Maxtor.

Copy all the files from the Maxtor, e.g., onto another external drive, or "burning" to DVD disks, and then replace the Maxtor disk-drive.

Write delay message could not save all data for file F:\$FMft when doing back up using WD my book premium II 2tb raid split

I presume that Windows assigned 'F:' to your WD MyBook.

Windows was trying to write the 'MFT' ("Master File Table") file, to the 'F:' drive, but it failed to complete.

Is the drive "full" ? Can you delete some files, and try again to doing your "backup"?

Cant get my computer to recognize my WD My Book external device. I have tried 2 different cables (both types) into 2 different ports on my computer that I can confirm work. The ''configure'' hardware...

Hi,

Simply put, the driver for any version of window 2000 or newer is already built into windows. If you've tried it on 2 non-adjecent ports(as pairs are simply a splitting of one hub) then you've already confirmed it is not the driver. For final confirmation(in case the windows drivers folder is corrupt), try it on a different computer. If this works, reply back telling me it's a failed driver, if not, your enclosure has failed.

If the enclosure has failed and you don't have any crucial files on it that you don't already have elsewhere, contact WD for a warranty replacement.

If the enclosure has failed and you DO have important files on it, try having your local PC shop move the hard drive into a new enclosure, if that works you're done, buy the new enclosure.

If both above options fail, your drive is damaged and you will need a pro to help get back your files. If this is the case, reply back with you location(Country, State and City) and I will pass along recommendations for your neck of the woods.

Hope this helps FixYa,

Chris
