Question about Teledyne Laars Laars Lite 2 Pool Heater 125,000 Btu / Propane Gas

Open Question

I have a teledyne laars xe eg-175 pool heater, and cant get it to stay lit without holding the pilot button down.. Is this always caused by the thermocoupling going out? Or could it be the controller or the main valve also? Is there a way I can test the system without the thermocoupling in the loop to verify this is the problem. Where can I find a manual for this one? Thanks for the help.... ps I was unable to put in the proper model for the heater in the product box so please forgive the "lite 2" shown there. It is the xe eg-175.

First of all, I'm assuming that your heater has a pilot and not self ignition. You will need a jumper wire ( 16" of wire with an alligator clip on each end)attach one end to the terminal on the gas valve that the red wire from the pilot generator is connected to ( pilot gen. is the thing the pilot flame touches).
Now attach the other end of the jumper to the terminal where the wire from the connects to the knob where you set the water temp).
NOTE:
JUMPING BYPASSES ALL BUILT IN SAFETY DEVICES AND IS FOR TEST LEAVE THE JUMPER CONNECTED TO RUN THE HEATER FOR HEATING PURPOSES!!!!

The heat wont turn on and pilot does not stay lit

If this is a M/V heater you must have at least 400mv/dc to hold the pilot valve open. Check to make sure that the pilot is lighting, then hold the pilot valve down for about a minute. If the the pilot goes out you need to see what the m/v reading is. Chances are you have a bad pilot or gen. Replace.

We have a teledyne gas furnace whose pilot won't stay lit. Any ideas?

Is this a standing pilot,or pilot always on.

If so a bad thermocouple will cause pilot to go out.

Thermocouple is a small copper tube running from the pilot light area to the gas valve. easy to replace.

It sounds like a thermocouple has gone bad. this is a very common problem with gas powered things ie; water heaters, furnaces, hot tubs. The telltale sign is when you release the pilot light button it won't stay lit. This is a safety feature and is relatively inexpensive and easy to repair.

Pilot light wont stay lit

If this is a new item then you will need to let the gas run alittle bit longer. If this is a used item then it sounds like you are going to need to replace the flame sensor. You may have to even do it on the new item. But usually for the first start you willl need to hold the pilot down for about 1 minute to really let things heat up in there then when you release all will work
