There isnt a true mixture screw on most of the walk behind mowers.

All you can do is remove the main jet *(its actually the bolt you remove to take off the carb bowl!) and clean out the passages in it. Be sure to clean the very small jet at the top of the threads. It is so tiny you will need a magnafying glass and a wire brush cleaning to see it.

Old style carbs had bottom screws with adjustable jets in them. If your equipment is old enough you might see one of these. Otherwise it is just a hollowed out bolt.

You could also adjust the float level....increasing float level will richen up your mixture. It also sometimes improves priming.

Good luck and be careful

I have a Briggs & Stratton Vanguard 16 HP motor. It idles fine and it runs OK at high RPMS. But it backfires thru the carburetor during accelerating. Any suggestions?

On some float-type carburetors, you can adjust the air-fuel mixture and engine speed at idle. Check for an idle speed screw designed to keep the throttle plate from closing completely, and an idle mixture screw that limits the flow of fuel at idle. If your carburetor contains these screws, proceed below.
  1. With the engine off, remove the air filter and air cartridge.
  2. Locate the idle mixture screw and turn it clockwise until the needle lightly touches the seat. Then, turn the screw counterclockwise 1-1/2 turns.
  3. If your carburetor has a main jet adjustment screw at the base of the float bowl, turn the screw clockwise until you feel it just touch the seat inside the emulsion tube. Then, turn the screw counterclockwise 1 to 1-1/2 turns. Replace the air cleaner assembly and start the engine for final carburetor adjustments.
  4. Run the engine for five minutes at half throttle to bring it to its operating temperature. Then, turn the idle mixture screw slowly clockwise until the engine begins to slow. Turn the screw in the opposite direction until the engine again begins to slow . Finally, turn the screw back to the midpoint.
  5. Using a tachometer to gauge engine speed , set the idle speed screw to bring the engine to 1750 RPM for aluminum-cylinder engine or 1200 RPM for engine with a cast-iron cylinder sleeve.
  6. With the engine running at idle , hold the throttle lever against the idle speed screw to bring the engine speed to "true idle." Then, repeat the idle mixture screw adjustments from Step 4 to fine-tune the mixture .

Carburetor Adjustments

Many of the newer carburetors do not have any adjustments. Some have brass screws with a spring under it. These can be turned in or out. They either lean out the mixture or increase/ decrease the engine speed.

How to adjust carburetor--no screws

Joe,I found a parts schematic that shows the carburetor that includes an idle adjustment screw (part 95A). I know it'[s not the same a the two air/fuel mixture adjustment screws but this may be all you need to fix your problem. Start the engine, turn the screw clockwise until the engine begins to stall then give the screw a 1/2 counterclockwise turn or until the engine settles into a smooth idle. http://bsintek.basco.com/BriggsDocumentDisplay/29jnuDU.VFzXFix2.pdf

Hope this helps, Danno

When the float in the carb sticks, it allows fuel to drain into the cylinder, that runs pass the rings into the crankcase. When the crankcase is full the pistons cannot go down, and the starter won't turn the engine. Drain all the oil gas mixture, and refill with proper oil. Replace float, needle and seat in the carb bowl. Throughly clean fuel passages, and bowl. If motor won't turn, remove spark plug and turn over engine a few times to remove gas oil mixture from the cylinder too.

It appears that you have a slight mis-adjustment in the idle speed and idle mixture. To adjust setup, start with at least a half tank of fuel, and have engine at operating temperature (That is warm but not overly Hot). The Briggs & Stratton Website manuals section should show the locations of the adjusting screws if you are not sure of them.
To adjust idle speed set Throttle control to minimum and adjust screw on throttle butterfly to maintain a good idle speed. To adjust idle mixture, screw in idle mixture screw (Lean) until motor falters and then screw out (Rich) until it falters again. Correct setting is the halfway point of these two positions. You may have to re-adjust idle speed again and also the mixture to get best running.
If you are not comfortable doing this, take it to a B & S dealer.

Poor running engine on my lawn mower

I think you need more than a screw adjustment in the carburetor. It sounds as if you need a full tuneup. This means air filter, gas filter , carb. rebuild ,spark plug etc. Good luck. donnyb60
