Hello Carl;
You also asked about clutch removal, this should help.

  1. Check the IPL for your saw to see if any special tools are needed. Poulan (Craftsman, Jonsered, Husky) clutch removal tool part number 530031112 if needed, is under $5 from many sources (look at the visible area between the weights if 2 small round sockets are visible you need the tool).
  2. There are metal piston stops available, when square (almost never) with the piston top these work well, if not square they have been known to punch through the piston. I suggest a length of nylon rope (nothing left behind) be used instead of the piston stop (retain 6" ± so you can remove it). Make certain the piston is near the top of the cylinder before feeding the cord or it can fall through the exhaust port and damage the piston as it rises.
  3. 99.9% of clutches have left hand threads (tighten it to loosen it). If a finger nail held in the thread and rotated clockwise comes off the shaft it is a left hand thread. If it pinches against the clutch it is a right hand thread.

If you have more questions or need additional help please reply below and I will get back to you. HTH & Good Luck.
Lou

I have a CS-4400 Echo chainsaw that wont start. I don't think it is firing

1st thing let's check the spark.remove the plug leave it connected to the wire and ground the side of the plug to the engine. and have someone pull the started rope. watch the gap area of the plug for spark. make sure the plug is gap to factory specs, and hold it by the rubber booth. and the on switch is in the run position. good luck Tom

Will not run

You need to make sure it is mechanicaly ok ( not scuffed the piston ) remove the muffler and check the condition of the piston skirt through the open exhaust port, any sign of damage and the machine will need to come apart.

I have a Echo 452 CS, exchanged piston and rings, engine starts and runs perfect only when I start cutting wood the engine dies immediatly. Air filter is clean, spark is OK. What could be the problem?

Fuel starvation, either due to a blockage in the fuel filter in the tank, or a split fuel hose, or dirt in the carb, it may also be due to the carb settings set too lean, when you re fitted the new piston are you sure the base gasket was correctly seated? and any pulse holes were not covered ( gasket correct orientation ).

You have a lot of options if a drive sprocket.

  3. Everyone I have ever removed had a left handed thread (tighten it to loosen it).
It lists a special tool for clutch removal, see the IPL, page 15; item 16; pn 89750502830 - changes to 89750516133. Please verify ALL part numbers provided.

Trying to replace gear on echo cs 440 chain saw and not sure how to remove old gear

The IPL for a model 400 Echo can be found here:
http://www.echo-usa.com/pdf/documentation/CS400_C090_11_081007.pdf
It should not matter but please verify this fits your serial number.
From the IPL your saw has an outboard clutch. Use this the following as a guide. I didn't see any special tools on the IPL.

  1. Check at the IPL for your saw to see if any special tools are needed.
  2. A length of starter cord or nylon rope may be used instead of the piston stop (retain 6" ± so you can remove it). Make sure the piston is near the top of the cylinder before feeding the cord or it can fall through the exhaust port and damage the piston as it rises.
  3. It is probably a left handed thread (tighten it to loosen it).
Let us know how it worked for you. GL
