Question about Audio Players & Recorders

1 Answer

Hi, I'm about 40 miles NW of Chicago and reception here is not great. I like to listen to AM radio. I usually use my speakers just to listen to CD's, but I decided to try my Acoustic Research receivers with the speaker component of my entertainment group. A couple of the radio stations come in clearly but one of my favorites is really bad, with a high pitched whistle and lots of static. S/N 6492F3644, date code 2649NA. Is there anything I can do to get better reception? Bea Swanson

First make certain the CD player isn't on when the radio is on. CD players cause inteferance with radio's. Apart from that you will need a good aerial. If that doesn't improve it then it could be down to local conditions -hills, power lines etc, blocking the signal. Also check there's nothing around the house that might cause interferance to the signal.

If same, plug in a external speaker in back of radio into the external speaker jack. see what happens. If loud, re-place the speaker in the radio. We just bought a car with a Pioneer DEH-3900MP installed. We live about 35 miles out of Chicago and have never had any problem with reception on any other cars, but it sounds like we are about 75 miles...

i would check the connection between the antenna and the radio they tend to rust and the connection goes bad. you will have to check to see where its mounted to the fender and gain access to it if there is rust an aftermarket antenna isn't very expensive but may require an installer or dealer to do the swap out.

Distance of reception

Oh yeah. The best radio to get reach that distance with no problem would be a 10 meter, such as a General Lee, Connex, Stryker, or Galaxy with a 2 digit model number. Those, with a good antenna set up properly, will reach out 10 miles real clear and up to 14 - 15 miles with some reception loss.

Regular cb radios, such as Cobra, Galaxy 3 digit model numbers, Uniden, etc will have a decent reception, but generally when used barefoot, will only transmit and recieve about 6 miles real clear and up to 9 or 10 miles with a decent amount of signal loss.

Now, you do not have to have a big, expensive antenna to get the distance you want, you can do it with just a cheaper fiberglass stick antenna like a Francis 4 1/2 foot. After I installed a Francis antenna and a General Lee on a tuck outfited the other day, I was able to talk to a man apx 14 miles from my location.

The main thing to look for when installing the antenna is that you have a good coax (braided center conducto and 95% braided sheilding), and that the antenna is not grounded out, just the bracket (this is what makes your ground plane). Make sure the nylon spacer (looks like a plastic washer with a lip on it) is place on top of the antenna mount, with the lip facing down through the hole. You can use a magnet mount antenna, but you will have much much better luck with a hard mounted antenna.

If you have more questions, or if you need me to send a picture showing the placement of the antenna and bracket parts, dont hesitate to email me. rollincbmoew@yahoo.com

Transmits but doesnt receive

If the meter shows that it's receiving something, the microphone may be the problem. Another possibility is the speaker & plugging an external speaker in would confirm this. Aslo make sure the squelch control is turned all the way to the left (counter-clockwise) & the RF gain is turned to the right (clockwise).

AM radio reception

You are correct William, reception is not what it used to be for many reasons. Some corporate owners and local owners have spent much more maintaining FM facilities, and many have neglected the AM's. A good part of the AM signal is via the ground radials beneath each AM tower. In time these radials deteriorate, and with it the signal. Years ago stations licensed as daytime only shut down at night. Quite a few are now allowed to stay on with greatly reduced power, adding to the noise floor at night. You also have more AM licensees now than in the 60's. Unfortunately many of the really knowledgeable AM RF engineers have retired, or are close to doing so. AM directionals require a very experienced engineer. In addition we have many Part 15 radiators, that are devices that radiate a low level RF signal. Every home is full of them, thus more interference. We have power distribution systems that generate huge amounts of noise across the band too. Then there is the issue of manufacturers who have spent more on the FM receiver side of a radio as more migrated to FM. In the 60's, very few were FM listeners. Gone is sensitivity, selectivity and frequency response in the newer AM radios. There are a few exceptions, the CC Crane, and RCA SuperRadio, both sound good with great performance. By the way, the RCA WAS the GE SuperRadio. I also like to pick up some of the vintage radios on EBay and other sites, plus occasionally at yard sales. Unless you are in the country and don't have a house full of gadgets, DX listening can be difficult, but not impossible. Best of luck, capttomconroy@jetbroadband.com
