Question about Dryers

1 Answer

I just purchased a new home and the pigtail of my Amana dryer is different than the electrical outlet and the dryer does not have a schematic to install a new 4 wire pigtail. Is there an adapter to change from three prong to 4 prong or where can I get a schematic? Thank you.

There are no adapters. But a dryer will accept a 3 prong or 4 prong cord. The extra green wire just needs to be connected to any screw on the dryer casing. Some newer dryers have a screw there for it..or u can just use the closest screw avalable......usually the screw for the cover works good.

How do you connect the LG DLEX5101V Dryer to the electrical outlet on the wall if there is no cord to plug in?

There are a couple of types of plugs in homes - and the dryer manufacturer use this excuse to not ship a cord with the dryer - profiting that much more. You'll need to purchase a cord set for your dryer. Assuming you live in the U.S., that means you need a 30 amp 240 volt cord. That's easy enough, but it does get harder.

Most homes have an outlet that has three slots in it - like the one below:
steve_con_39.jpg
A 240 volt, 30 amp, 3 wire dryer plug.

New homes have a safer, 240 volt 30amp 4 wire plug. They look like the one below:
steve_con_40.jpg
A 240 volt, 30 amp, 4 wire dryer plug.

The code states that when a dryer is purchased it should be connected via a 4 wire cord. This means if you have the older, 3 wire outlet - it will have to be changed along with the entire length of cable between the electrical panel and the outlet (the new outlet needs a 4 wire cable - the older plug was supplied by a 3 wire cable).

Those are the rules. Many people opt to purchase the older 3 wire cords so that they can connect directly to the 3 wire outlet already installed in their home. As an electrician, I have to caution you on doing that. It is a violation of the electrical code as it has been identified as an unsafe condition. The code hopes to rectify this by slowly requiring new dryers to be wired with 4 wire cords and making the homeowner upgrade the old 3 wire outlet to a newer, safer 4 wire outlet. Of course, no one will come to see what you had and if you changed it, etc.

Mose hardware stores, Home Depot, Lowes, etc. sell these cords for under $20. Make sure you choose a 30 amp dryer cord - and not the similar looking but thicker 50 amp stove or range cord.

I hope this helps & good luck! Please rate my reply.

This system can be configured depending on what your wiring situation is.
For example you could be faced with the following situations:
converting an old 3-wire outlet
to a new electric dryer
converting a new 4-wire outlet
to an old electric dryer

The electrical outlet does not match with my dryer cable, so I get a new set of wire from home depot to match the wall outlet. how do I hook it up?

Hello, welcome to Fixya,

If you'll notice the new cord has 2 hot (red & black) a neutral (white) and ground/earth (green) wires. In case you are not sure how to connect I've attached a photo which shows the correct way.

Changing dryer plug

These two pictures illustrate the power wiring on a the terminal of an electric dryer. The one on top is the old-style three-wire configuration. Most people have this type in their homes. New code changes, though, require that dryers now have a four-wire cord, shown on the bottom.
Besides the number of wires in each cord, there are two important things to notice. First, in the four-wire configuration, notice that the dryer's grounding strap is folded back on itself. The whole point of the four-wire cord is to separate the ground from the neutral. The green wire (the "new" extra wire in the four-wire cord) is attached to the dryer cabinet. In the three-wire configuration, the grounding strap is left intact and the neutral and ground are tied together.

Sure hope this helps you find a resolution to your delimma! Best wishes.

go to the local hardware store and buy the male plug for the female plug that you have in the wall just hook up the three plugh in place of the 4 wire plug. The 4 wire has a netural and a ground which is the same thing and two 110 hot wires that are 110 v each, hook up the copper colored wires to the copper colered wires and the one ground on silver. screw or white to silver wire. this is Ground you only need one ground and if the plug on the wall is three prong it is go to use a three wire plug the third wire is for a backup ground on new systems

How many prongs are on amana NED5100TQ electric dryer? I have a new one being delivered today and currently have a 3 prong hookup

Generally you have to purchase the cord separate from the actual electric dryer. Therefore, call the company and tell them you have a 3 prong outlet, that way they can install a three prong plug. Many times, they bring both plugs with them and do the plug install on site. Enjoy your new dryer!

Whirlpool electric dryer keeps tripping main circuit breaker

First off, be sure the pigtail is wired correctly to the back of the unit. Black and red to the outside terminals, white to the middle, green to the frame or cabinet (should be a green screw close-by). If that is ok, you probably have an issue with possibly a bad pigtail, bad outlet, wiring issue, or possibly a bad circuit breaker or breaker box. Probably going to be more of a electrical problem than a appliance problem. Good Luck!!!!

Replacing a pigtail

You hook the Red and Black wires to the gold colored screws on the dryer, and the white wire goes to the siolver colored screw. The Green wire goes to the Body.
