LCD / External VGA output problems

Hi there!
I'm having trouble with my iBook G4, 14" 1.33GHz model. I'm running Leopard, the latest version. The screen broke not to long ago so i bought a G3 14" screen for my iBook. I know the cables are not the same. The thing is the computer used to work when plugged on an external monitor, now i can't seem to get that to work anymore. I'm very certain this isn't a logic board problem as that's never stopped the iBook from working on an external monitor in my experience. Both, the LCD and external monitors show a sign of signal when the computer is turned on but then nothing more, the screen stays black. I have tried flashing some light through the screen to see if it's the backlight but it isn't the case. What could be wrong here?

Hi
If you are still faced with this problem.....
Possibly the video card has gone in the unit. The original screen on the laptop may have had an blown inverter which would not stop the funcioning of the external display. However for the external disply to stop working would suggest the video card. Before going this far have you checked to see if there is power to the external monitor? Have you tried the monitor on another computer? If the monitor works with another computer you can be certain there is more wrong with your poor old iBook. You will need to take it in to be looked at.

Hope this helps.

Regards

Hi Chloe. Sorry to tell you that the latest version of flash player will not work on your G4. You may be able to find a version of Flash on their support pages that is newer than the one you currently have but this is still not likely to solve your problem. The latest version of Flash requires a newer Intel chip MacBook rather than the old G4 chip iBook. You might get lucky (as I have done) and be able to buy a working MacBook on eBay. This will be able to run 10.6 (Snow Leopard) and you should be able to download the latest Flash. The MacBooks replaced the iBooks when Apple switched to using Intel chips - like Windows PCs. Best wishes.

The problem appears to be that your ibook is only a G4 processor snow leopard needs an intel processor. The highest system you can instal on it is 10.5 i.e. leopard.

Ibook external monitor hardware

Hi,
Check which video out connector your mac has (there have been a few in the last gew years) and then buy the appropriate adaptor from the apple store. (or ebay) This will give you a standard VGA connector that you can then connect to most monitors with a standard VGA lead.

Hello, I have a 12.1-inch Dell Inspiron Mini netbook, and I was wondering if I can contact it to Dell flat screen monitor?

Depending upon the model, it looks like many of the Dell Inspiron Mini's have a VGA output and will accept an external monitor. Look for a 15 Pin VGA connector on the rear or side of the mini. If you provide a specific model of mini, I can verify 100% if it will accept an external monitor.

It is likely that your laptop is not up-to-date enough to browse YouTube. There are a few options-

1. Buy a new laptop.
  • Most laptops these days (with the exception of some off-market netbooks) either meet YouTube's required specifications or go beyond it.
2. Try YouTube Feather- http://www.youtube.com/feather_beta
  • YouTube Feather is essentially a low-weight version of YouTube's website. This should run much better on older machines.
3. Update your laptop. You have a few options...
  • Make sure that you have the latest version of Abode Flash Player. It can be downloaded here- http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/
  • Upgrade the Mac OS. I can't see this being a problem, but its possible.
  • Lastly, be sure to have the latest version of you internet browser installed.

Good luck!
