Last one i done was like a star shaped washer thing that clipped onto the end of the axle and two screwdrivers soon prised it back ,changed the plastic wheel and then just pushed the clip back over the axle and tapped it on a little more so that the ring part went back into the groove on the axle

WHAT IF ANY SPECIAL TOOLS ARE NEEDED TO REPLACE A REAR WHEEL BEARING ?

No.
The most you'll need is a big hammer or a air hammer to loosen the bearing from the spindle but just like changing a front bearing

If you are talking about removing the steering wheel, you need a special puller after you remove the nut on the shaft.

Do i need any special tools to remove and replace the rear wheel bearings on a 1991 ae95r corolla? or can i manage with a pretty basic tool set? cheers.

the rear wheel bearings have to be pressed together, you have to remove the hole hub assembly and then have some one press the hub apart and back together, so what i am saying is that you can remove the hub assembly with just some basic hand tools but unless you have a press you can not replace the bearing.
