My stainless steel sink has black discoloration spots caused by a product called Zap which I pored down the sink. Is there anything that can restore the sink to its orginal state. This is a chemical reaction between the stainless steel and the Zap porcelean cleaner. Thanks Bob

Oxalic acid used in a "quick fashion" wil correct the results of the chemical reaction. Use oxalic (wood bleach sec tion of your hardware store) in a dulute solutin with scrotch bright #7447 purple pad ( get at your automotive stores) finess gently with the grain and rinse. Now pacify the surface with DeBruce Polish. We use DeBruce Polish in a maintenance scenario on all of our buildings and residential kitchen appliances, DeBruce is Eco-Friendly and also works on your porcelean and glass cook tops. We find BeBruce Polish at debrucepolish.com. Their stuff really works and is non-toxic!! We replaced 6 products in our green campain- Thanks DeBruce

The best product I have found to remove water spots is a product called A-maz water stain remover in a 14 oz tub. There is no magic "wipe on,wipe off" product that I have found. Initially it is a little labor intensive but this is amazing stuff and can return your sink to its original luster.

This company also make a sealer but I have not tried it. A couple of alternatives might be Rain-X or Maguires auto wax. The concept here is to put a barrier down that will seal the pores of the sink and make it easier next time to remove the spots. My favorite is Maguires about every 3 months. I have provided a link below to the A-maz web site where you can find a distributor nearest you.

How to remove scratches from stainless steel appliances

Try this at your own risk. Step 1 Consider using a product made for stainless steel2_bing.gif such as Scratch-B-Gone or Bar Keepers Friend (see Tips).
  • Step 2 Or, try spraying an all-purpose cleaner (such as Formula 4092_bing.gif) on the scratches.
  • Step 3 Use a non-metal scouring pad (such as Scotch-Brite pads) to rub the cleaner in, always rubbing in the direction of the grain.
  • Step 4 Keep the stainless steel wet with the cleaner as you work, and rinse the pad often.
  • Step 5 Rinse the surface and wipe dry.
  • jQuery('.article ol .image').each(function(i,e){ var $this = jQuery(this); $this.find('img').error(function(){ jQuery(this).remove(); $this.remove(); }); });
    Tips & Warnings
    • Before using any treatment on your stainless cookware, sink or appliances, it is wise to call the manufacturer for advice.
    • A new product called Scratch-B-Gone is touted as the "first aid kit for stainless steel." You can find it at many home improvement stores.
    • Bar Keepers Friend is another product for stainless steel. It can be found in most grocery or home improvement stores, or at www.barkeepersfriend.com.
    • To keep stainless steel sinks from scratching, put a rubber mat in the bottom of the sink to protect it.
    • Avoid using abrasive

Use Lime Away. It helped with mine as the white spots were due to lime in the water. Be careful not to get the lime away on your marble, stainless steel sink, etc. as it will cause discoloration. I found out the hard way. Good luck.

    Zap damage to stainless steel

You should try a citrus based stainless steel cleaning agent, this should take off the stain. Otherwise you can do a test on a concealed spot, stain it with Zap and then lightly brush over in straight lines with medium sandpaper in same direction as original. But try it on a concealed area first.

Use a product like lime-away may help. These water spots are caused from calcium buildup. Lime-away or similar product will dissolve the calcium. Then use the stainless cleaner on it.

    SCRATCHED STAINLESS STEEL SINK

Have you tried a really fine steel wool? I don't know if this would work. I have stainless steel farmhouse sink, front exposed all stainless steel. My contractor scratched it up horribly when he was putting it into the kichen. he fixed it amazingly with a fine steel wool pad. I don't know if your scratch is too deep for that but it couldn't hurt. The scratches on our sink were surface but very noticeable. Hope this helps.
