Question about Whirlpool Refrigerators

1 Answer

I have a Whirlpool side by side with ice maker and water dispenser manufactured in 12/2001, model ED5FHGXKQ02. We have never had a problem with it until today. Woke up this morning and all food in the freezer was pretty much defrosted and ice melting. refrigerator temp looked to be around 48. fan was blowing in freezer but only cool. temp settings were both set in the normal positions and have always been set there. Called to have someone come out and now after a few hours later it now appears freezer is now working again. temp is back down to zero range and fridge side though is still only about 46. I did however earlier raise the temp settings on both 3/4 of the way up to coldest settings. Was this a freak thing? I dont know whether to cancel the service tech. Is it possible the compressor is going bad? Or does this have some sort of a self defrost and now is back to normal? Not sure what to do here.

It could be the defrost system which I describe below. Also make sure the fan around the back near the compressor behind the cardboard cover is running when the compressor is. It could have stopped and started back. I would particularly check the defrost thermostat described below.
The defrost system:
The evaporator coil behind the cover on the back wall inside the freezer will ice up under normal conditions. Every 8 to 10 hours for around 20 minutes the defrost timer (or in most newer models the electronic adaptive defrost control) will turn the defrost heater on to melt the built up ice. There is a defrost thermostat which prevents the heater from overheating the freezer by breaking the heater circuit when the temp reaches close to 32 degrees F. The entire cooling system shuts off during the defrost cycle and starts back when the timer advances through the cycle.

If this ice is not melted it will continue to build up until the air can’t flow over the coil to circulate the cold air through the freezer and into the fridge. The temperature change in the fridge is usually noticed first followed by the freezer.

If the defrost thermostat is bad, it can prevent the heater from coming on OR it won’t turn the heater off when it gets too warm. It is clamped to the evaporator coil at the top to sense the temp. If it appears to be misshapen it is bad.
With an ohm meter it should show continuity when cold and none when warm.
You can also bypass(disconnect the two wires plugged into it and twist them together) the thermostat to see if the heater comes on then. If it does then you know the thermostat is bad and needs replaced.

The defrost heater is located on the evaporator. It is in a tube which is at the bottom and can also go up the sides of the evaporator. On some types you can see a burnt spot if it’s bad. With an ohm meter it should show continuity from end to end when disconnected from the wiring in the freezer. You can also test the wiring for voltage when it’s in the defrost mode.

you have a defrost timer you can test it. It is in the fridge with the controls at the top. You can turn the defrost timer till it clicks and everything shuts down. The heater should now come on. If it does, replace the timer because that means the timer is not running. If it doesn't, check the heater and defrost thermostat. Turn the timer again till everything starts back up to end the defrost cycle.

Defrost timer is part 6 on this diagram and parts list. http://www.appliancepartspros.com/partsearch/model.aspx?model_id=265866&diagram_id=119187#d119187

If the ice maker is not refilling with water after its last harvest that points to the=> W10408179 Water Inlet Valve. If the ice maker just sits there with ice and does not empty into the ice bucket we will need to test the 4389102 Ice Level Control
Instructions on how to test can be found HERE If you have something else happening here please let me know, Sea Breeze
If the ice maker is not refilling with water the side of the water control valve that fills the ice maker is defective and you will still get water from the dispenser. The parts I listeed above are for your GS6SHAXLS03 refrigerator.

Replace water inlet valve for ice dispenser with new. When icemaker cycles it dispenses through the water dispenser instead of tube going to ice maker. I have switch lines around but can only get water...

The ice maker is what tells the water control valve to open so it may be correct now and the thermostat in ice maker may be defective. Part 27 or 627985 down below where it says Whirlpool Ice Maker Parts Breakdown and in that photo is the ice maker thermostat. If your ice maker has been used for many years the complete ice maker may be better to replace. Ice maker Model=> 4317943
Or click here=>Point and Click Then enter model or part number into search feature. If you have questions please ask, Thanks, Sea Breeze

Whirlpool ref side by side.. water will not flow into ice maker so it makes no ice . Water does come out of drinking dispenser

The start device on some models of refridgerator for maytag and whirlpool have been recalled. If your appliance was manufactured in the last 5-10 years you may be having an issue with this component. Mine recently caught on fire at this device that is located near the compressor. If you would like to be a part of the petition for a recall on this appliance contact me at jboooor@hotmail.com

Ice maker not working ; water dispenser ok

The reason could be several different possibilities. the water control valve for the ice maker no longer works or one of the many components inside the ice maker is needing replace or adjusted. Go to link below and enter model ED5VHGXM into model search. Click on photo #12 ice maker and you get a breakdown of of all the parts. Let me know, Sea Breeze

ICE MAKER QUIT MAKING ICE ON MY WHIRLPOOL FRIDGE

I had a Whirlpool Model GD5SHAXNS in which the icemaker quit working about the same time (3 years old). I had water out the dispenser, I found that it was the icemaker itself failed not calling for water to fill it. I replaced it with a icemaker on-line for about $100 and problem fixed. I have been told his is a common problem with the icemaker in this model ref.

Whirlpool side by side refrigerator, model # ED25PQ

Under the right side of the fridge in the back there is a dual valve for water and ice. Try changing it out, most likely the ice side is not working. Make sure you unplug the unit first
