4-prong to 3-prong Power Cord Conversion.

On a 4-prong power cord you have 2 hot wires, one neutral wire, and one ground wire. On a three prong cord, you have 2 hot wires and one neutral/ground wire. The difference is the on four prong the neutral wire goes to electrical neutral bus in the breaker panel and the ground wire goes to the ground bus in the breaker panel. Since the neutral and ground buses, although separate, both go to physical ground, on a three-wire setup, you are just putting the neutral and ground wire together, Most dryers actually have a place at the pigtail connection to do just that.

How to connect power cord

Hello Jake. It depends on whether or not you have a 3 prong cord (3 wires), or a 4 prong cord (4 wires). So I'll just tell you both.
For Three Prong Cords
the Center cord wire goes on the center terminal,
the left on the left ,
and the right on the right.

Note: There should be a ground strap or wire that runs from the center terminal to the dryer case

wrightly_3.jpgHere is an example of a 3 prong cord for a whirlpool dryer. If your terminal block has 5 screws, you still do it the same way as stated above. these wires are not colored. You should have a strap in the middle that is connected with the middle wire. Sometimes there is a wire attached there instead of a strap.

For Four Prong Cords
the White cord wire goes in the center,
the Red on the Right,
the Black on the Left.
The green cord wire goes to the case or the external ground screw.

Here's an picture to use as an example;

wrightly_4.jpgJust be sure to use the strain relief at the opening where the power cord first enters the dryer. It will help secure these connections against being pulled loose or cut on the cabinet, and that could pose a risk of you coming close friends with 240 volts. Not a friend I want to have.

I hope this is helpful,
If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

I have a 4 prong dryer but the plug in the wall is a three prong, ibought a four prong plug and i dont know how to connect a three wire into a four prong plug please help me.. hugo

Do NOT try and change the receptacle please. It is dangerous and we do not want anyone getting hurt. In your case, it would be better to put a 3 prong cord on the dryer. Overall you could call an electrician to install the 4 prong receptacle, which will require new 4 conductor wire as well and run to the breaker box. Get a flat style 3 prong dryer cord and we'll tell you how to install it. Unless you call an electrician. ;-) If this helps you, please rate my answer. Thank you.

Need to change from 3 prong cord to

disconnect the green or brass ground strap from the terminal block to the body then wire the new plugs three colors the same as the old then connect the green from the plug strait to the body. on a 3 wire the dryer is grounded through the neutral, on a 4 wire the ground goes to the body.

I need to switch my three prong power chord to a four prong

your terminal block on the dryer will have three screws in a row and there will be a green screw on the outer skin next to the terminal block cover - your four-wire cord will have a white wire, red, black and green wires - white wire goes on the center screw of the terminal block, red wire goes on one of the other screws of the terminal block, it doesn't matter which, black wire goes on remaining terminal block screw, green wire goes to the green screw

Can you tell me how to hookup the three wires of 3 prong cord to the back of dryer that came with 4 wires(4 prong)? Which one goes where? I only have 3 prong plugs at my house. Thank you.

The following link explains how to connect a power cord to your appliance:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r793520-3_prong_4_prong_power_cord_conversion

Now keep in mind, some newer appliances REQUIRE a 4-prong plug in order to work properly. You may consider having a four-prong outlet installed to accomodate your dryer.

You can try these steps by referring to to section that discusses converting from a 4-prong to a 3-prong power cord.

If you have questions, please let me know. I hope this helps you.

We are trying to connect an OLD Kenmore dryer which has a three-prong connection. We bought a 4-prong cord, but we do not know how to connect it as the 3-prong cord has all grey wires. Would appreciate...

Look at the plug wires. On the 4 prong plug, it should be labeled which ones are neutral. Some plugs even come with a diagram stating which wires lead where. Back to the plug itself, rule of thumb, the flattest part of the plug goes to the block, so lay the connections on the ground where they lay flat on the floor, left loop will got to left side of powerblock, right loop to the right side, the other 2 are used for a ground. look at the specs for the dryer also.
