Question about Computers & Internet

Function Keys I have an older Sony Vaio Laptop. I wanted to hook it up to our new HDTV but the function keys, F8, are not responding. I tried your suggestion of hitting Numlock/Fn key with no luck...I also held down the Numlock key for 5 seconds to turn on the toggle switch with no luck. Any other way to switch from LCD to TV function?

Just trying to have my HDTV to display as computer monitor. Currently, all I get is a blue screen. It worked previously with an older desktop...now I want to use a laptop. Function keys are not working to allow me to switch from LCD to TV.

    Thanks....

Thanks for your input......the screen on the tv is blue....nothing else....no icons....I think it must be due to the fact that the function keys don't work and I can't switch from LCD to TV using F8.

It could be a resolution problems if the HDTV is too big or you may need to adkust you graphics hardware excelerater.

Your just trying to get your display to mirror to the HDTV right? Are you getting any display at all on the HDTV fromt eh laptop?

Sorry, i do alot of these and i cant remember what your original post was.

When its hooked up the T.V. are you turning on the laptop after you hook it up, or before. Try hooking everything up and then powering it all on.

Also, you said you only get a blue background?

Is the background on your Laptops desktop Blue also?, But with all your icons and taskbar at the bottom?

If so, you may be in EXTENDED DESKTOP. drag your mouse all the way to the right of the screen on the laptop and it should then apear on the T.V. If so then you are in extended desktop. You can switch it to Mirror in the video options and it will copy your desktop instead so they look identical.

In extended desktop, you have to drag items off the right of the screen untill it appears in the T.V. screen, then you can maximise the window and it will fit into the t.v.'s size.

well it should be able to do both at the same time. Are you sure you have the Latest Video drivers installed. Sometimes under the ADVANCED feature in the graphics settings you have to turn on the T.V. option, then select MIRROR DESKTOP.

Im not sure where else to go with this without having the ability to have my hands on it.

I just hooked my lap top to my Samsung hdtv with a vga display cable - what do i need to do to get the picture to come on the screen

Most computers have a function key that allows the screen to be viewed via monitor or projector. Most PC computers are Function f5 but some are f8. if it is not one of those check your keyboard for a monitor screen on one of the keys or your manual to see which function key your laptop requires.

I can't find the the hotkey utility application from the sony web site.model is VGN-NR160E. Tks !

To enable the Function keys in the Computer, it is required to install VAIO Event Services. In older Computers, the application was called Hotkey Utility and in the newer Models, VAIO Event Services is used to enable the Function keys. You can download the VAIO Event Services (Notebook Utility) from the link below.

How do i get my laptop screen to show on my tv? I have my laptop hooked to my tv with a VGA cable and my tv input is on vga, nothing comes on just blank screen

Most laptops have some key or combination of keys you need to push to tell the laptop to send the image to the alternate screen (VGA out). On Dell laptops it's often the F8 key. Pushing this key multiple times will typically toggle the output between your laptop screen, the VGA output and both at once. I hope this helps you out.

I have a sony vaio lalptop and some letters are not working at all: 9,o,l,,,. (I am on another laptop). Help

Hi treborswindl
Look on the keyboard to see whether any of the function keys on the top row are on. If so, you have to turn it off.
How do you do it?
Locate the [FN] key at the bottom (this is the function key between the [CTRL] and [WIN] keys.
Hold down the [FN] key and the numbered function key which is on ( for example F11 ) the top row which is lit.
Goto Microsoft word or Notepad and try out your keys.
Hope this will work for you.
Good luck

I purchased Vaio VGN-ns21m keyboard dont function f1 f2... canc

i guess f1, f2, and all the function keys are given with added fn key in the left corner of the keypad. search for the blue icon with fn in the keypad. that should solve it. press fn along with the key you want to use.

"W", "D", and "C" keys no longer function.

tihs can be fixed. you'll need to buy another keyboard either on eBay or Sony - or a reseller. They are about $30 each - and are relatively simple to replace.

As for upgrading the ram - if that's on a laptop, chances are you don't need matching pairs.

Check for an F Lock key on your keyboard.

By pressing it, it should activate your F Keys and F8 should work as advertised.
