Question about Dell Studio Slim-Tower Desktop Computer

2 Answers

At least two times a day, my Dell computer turns off, it makes a whirring sound just prior to turning off. I tried to install new software and an error message pops up to insert a cd in the drive. The cd drive then opens with the cd in it!? Can you help? Thanks!

First thing to do is open it up and give it a good cleaning as it may be overheating. http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial118.html After you get it cleaned post the software you are trying to install. Also what OS are you running?

Ok, you are trying to upgrade from Windows Vista to Windows 7. Know that if you have Vista Premium you must upgrade to Windows 7 Premium. You cannot upgrade Vista Premium to & Professional. You can do a clean install but not an upgrade. I recommend you go to Windows and run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/detai...
to make sure you can upgrade and what to. You need to find out why the computer is shutting down suddenly before you attempt the upgrade. If it shuts down in the middle of the upgrade, which can take hours, you may end up loosing all your data. I suspect it is shutting down due to dust that has collected on the CPU and it is overheating. Make sure the heat sink of top of the CPU is secure. Also make sure the fans are all running. CPU, and power supply fan, plus the case fan. You may have a fan that is not running due to dust or it is just bad. That whirring sound can also be the hard drive failing unless it is the fan speeding up to help cool the computer. Once you solve the sudden shutdown issue then do the upgrade as instructed in this video. You may have to restart the computer with the upgrade disc in the CD drive if it will not work normally.

If you had a graphics card prior to this one make sure all software from previous card is uninstalled. If you installed your card correctly, it should come up normally then, you can run your installation cd. If it is not coming up properly, see if you can start in "safe mode", go to "device manager", click on the box next to "sound , video, and game controllers", then click on your card and in the list make sure you see "disable". If you see "enable" click on that and exit, then restart. You should now be able to run your cd. If you had prior software and didn't uninstall before the install of new software, you may have to start over. After your original install from cd you can get all prior updates from Nvidia

Blue screen on my dell latitude d600 tells me its dumping memory and that its complete says contact tech support

Hello my friend,
The blue screen is very popular and it's usually happen when there is a file system deleted or a virus on your computer.
You may try to boot up your system in safe mode and then uninstall any software that you installed recently and restore also your computer to a date when it was working fine.
If this doesn't fix the issue, you can try the recovery system if enabled when you installed your system for the first time.
If it's not the case, the only way to get this computer working again is by formating your computer and installing windows again.
Best Regards,

How do I replace a dell dinension 4400 sound card in the desk top

You can't replace onboard audio, if it's PCI then all you do
is locate which slot it's in, unscrew the small mounting
screw, then carefully pull it out of it's slot, Replace with
new card in reverse order, make sure you have the
software drivers for your new card, and install them prior
to changing the card or follow the manufacturers directions
for installing the drivers...

Dell computer was working and i turned it on next day and it was dead no lights or noyhing

If your computer is under warranty, I'd suggest you contact either the Vendor where you bought it, or the Dell support site. Either should be able to acquire a new power supply and install it for you free of charge (if under warranty).

Some other thoughts though, before you do that. If there are no indicators that your power supply has died (smell burnt electronics, any weird buzzing sound prior to the computer not working, etceteras), then you might want to check the connections to the wall socket, the connection to the PSU itself, and even test the circuit breaker for your socket (some wall sockets have test / reset buttons that cut the power during surges).

Cars turns over, but will not start

fuel pump??? two ways to test one good, one not so good. fist, without cranking over the motor, have someone go and listne in the back where the fuel tank is and try and here if there is a whirring sound when the key is put in the on position. you might not be able to here it. second (have a rag handy) undo one of the fuel lines and see if there is any pressure going to it = if none = dead fuel pump. third way....if it is easy to access the top of the fuel tank where the pump is, do so. remove pump and see if it works. also, if its an externally mounted pump, gently tap it with a wrench on the outside of the pump casing...this an actually make them work for a short time.

Dell Inspiron 6000 PC Notebook

This sounds like the hard drive is failing. At this point you will need to run a system repair with your recovery or operating system disc. If the repair doesn't take, then reformat the hard drive and install a new operating system. If you have any issues during or after the format or install, then the hard drive has failed and will need to be replaced.

Blinking Lights, Computer Wont Boot

If it's blinking 9 times then it's likely telling you one or more of the RAM sticks are in need of replacement. To check these, remove the laptops power cord and battery, then locate and remove, the cover for the RAM. Remove one chip at a time and try booting the laptop.
