309i sub not working

My mordaunt short 309i sub made a bad noise then stopped working what do i do?

My Mordaunt Short 309i has made strange noise when amp and music source were switched off. It was very low freequency boom-bom-bom-booms as if someone was banging nails into the wall few floors beneath. And it was not constant. It would sound few booms and go quite for a while and few minutes or even hours later it would do it again - so very randoomly. The only way to "keep it quiet" was to unplug from mains.

After few months it stopped completley.

I am about to change the fuse, but I suspect there must be a reason for fuse to blow up.

I tried to take the back plate off, and I have taken all screws out but could not manage to take the plate off.

    Can anyone help?

Hi my name is Ben. I have a Mordaunt Short home theatre system which is probably 6 yo but has had very little use. On standby mode, the 309W sub started to make a buzzing sound with intermittent louder...

It can be repaired. A transistor shorted and possibly some resistors burned open as well. This is due to an overload causing the transistor to drive hard creating heat and eventually shorting out. The transistor needs to be isolated, removed, and replaced as well as the resistors.

My mordaunt-short avant 908i front left speaker aluminum tweeter stopped working... no sound coming out, however two midrange speakers functioning just fine.

I had similar problems my tweeter was blowen and it had to be replaced... I actually blew the speaker many times using a NAD amp as there were spikes coming from the amp. I changed the amp to a Marantz PM7200 and have had no problems since.

My Sub has stopped working the LED light does turn green but no output comes out of the sub...... any ideas ?

Check that the connection to both the amp and sub are in place and that the wire is not comprimised. Otherwise, have you changed the settings on your amp lately? It could simply be a matter of adjusting settings. If in doubt, start from the start and treat it as a piece of new equipment - set it up from the beginning and follow all steps from the manual.

Mordaunt Short Avant 309i subwoofer set-up

Lots of ways. To set it up properly you will need a decibel meter, Radio Shack makes a nice one. With the meter volume can easily be set as well as phase. I'm assuming frequency is the crossover frequency, generally set at 80Hz. This one involves some trial and error as I am not familiar with your speakers. Don't know much about the notch filter. A good resource for setting up subs can be found at: http://www.hometheatershack.com/forums/bfd-rew-forum/index3.html

No Power - LED not lit.

Open up the back of your gale 3080 and check the 2 fuses situated near the transformer. They look like 2 silver cylindrical shapes.Check that they have not blown if they have the will cost you around £2 to replace.Better than the 50 quid you will pay when you take it to your hi fi dealer to open up the back of it.
