The CD drive's read head is broken.
you will need to replace the entire drive. it is very easy to do however.

a replacement drive will set you back $20-40 USD and can be purchased from most computer hardware stores.

here is a YOUTUBE video purporting to show exactly how to replace it on your model of Dell. how convenient!

My dvd-raw ds is not reading on my inspiron 1501. I have a recorded my holiday video on a maxwell dv-raw ds (mini dvd) and I cant play it on my dell laptop. I was wondering if you could help? Many Thanks.

you will have to place the disc back in the computer you used to burn it and "close session" this is a common thing with re-writable discs or where discs ar burnt as a data disc.

the exact method of losing discs varies from burning programs to program.

You should check the options of the program you used and look for "close session" or "close disc" or "end session"
sometimes it is useful to write a very small file and then make sure tha the option is ticked before you do so.

Not play in cd or dvd

If you can't get your laptop to play cd's or dvd's the best thing to try is to take a damp q-tip and gently wipe off the laser to make sure there is no specs of dust or dirt that are interfering.

After you do that if you still can't get it to play a cd or dvd, then the drive is bad and would need to be replaced.

DVD not recognized

do check if dvd-rw drive supports the dvd you want to burn to ( either dvd+ or dvd- !)and do use a freeware burnprobgram like burnatonce instead of the build-in windows one...
burnatonce will tell you all about your drive (see tools - device info) and the disc you've put in!

happy burnin'

Your laptop has a built in dvd-rw so it can definitely recognize the dvd 9 format. Any dvd-rw can recognize that format regardless of the laptop or desktop computers.

Inspiron burns unreadable CD/DVD

Try using a different software for burning (i.e., Nero, Windows, etc.) or verify that your media is correct (i.e., -R or + R or -/+R) for your burner.

Can't burn an audio cd on my dell inspiron 1525

do one thing
go to the my computer > right click on the burner drive > properties > recorder > and than chk if that the recording option is checked or not
if not check it
if it is alread there
right click on my computer > properties > hardware > device manager > click on cd /dvd drive and uninstall the options there
than click on the IDE / ATA
and uninstall the secondary chanel first
and uninstall the primary channel .... but be sure that you do this in the same sequence coz if u have a ATA hard drive thats normally connected to the primary channel and if u uninstall that first it will freeze the system... after that is done restart the system and issue resolved
