My computer won't accept my password. I tried switching to an external key board. but it does not work.

You said you tried an external keyboard. Is it that you are unable to type your password, or that the password you type does not match what is stored in the computer? If the problem is that you can't type your password- either put an adapter on your keyboard to make it a PS2 from a USB, or go into your BIOS and make sure that USB is recognized from the BIOS rather than the operating system. If the problem is that you get a message that the password is incorrect, then the stored password is corrupt, and the answer to that would take more space than would be allowed

Won't take Password!

What you could do is take the keyboard off with some screws at the back, and look for the rom bios battery (looks like you car remote battery). Take that off for 30 seconds, put it back in, and put the keyboard back in. Try to boot the system, you might be ok, if not there's nothing I know of could fix it.

Dell Studio 17 Laptop - all keys are locked....can't even type in password to log in for diagnostic

Unplug the mouse. Boot into the bios and see if the keyboard will work there. If it will. exit the bios. As soon as you see the Dell splash screen start tapping the F8 key and boot inot safe mode. See if the keyboard will work in safe mode. If it will that means you have a driver conflict in normal mode.

If neither of these options work, Contact Dell to get the system either

A. Onsite repair

B. Replace the system.

Also try.....1) disconnect A/C power supply, 2) remove battery, 3) press and hold the "power on" button for between 15 to 30 seconds, 4) re-install the battery, 5) re-start the laptop.

I restarted my computer and keyboard not working

It sounds like you might have accidentally turned on the laptop number lock. I am assuming you are seeing that characters are being typed, but the password is not accepted. If this is the case, try turning off the num lock by pressing the FN key (usually found by on the lower left by the CTRL and/or ALT keys).

If this doesn't work, trying entering the BIOS when starting the computer (usually by pressing F2 repeatedly when you see the DELL logo). In the BIOS look for an option for the numlock and turn it off.

Last shot - I have seen a few times where num lock is remembered when an external keyboard is used and then stays enabled on the laptop after it is disconnected. If you used a plugged in keyboard and/or use a docking station, you may want to try plugging in the keyboard again, disable NumLock (above the number pad on the right) and then shut down. Remove the external keyboard and I suspect the laptop won't have this issue.

Hope this helps,
