Hi,

Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended. If the camera is still under warranty, before trying any of these, please please first contact your camera's maker to see if they'll cover the repair, or to determine how much they'll charge for the repair. Who knows, you might get lucky. But if they quote you a number that's higher than the value of your camera, you may want to consider the following methods.

Place the camera flat on its back on a table, pointed at the ceiling. Press and hold the shutter button down, and at the same time press the power-on button. The idea is that the camera will try to auto focus while the lens is extending, hopefully seating the lens barrel guide pins in their slots. Blow compressed air in the gaps around the lens barrels with the idea of blowing out any sand or grit that may be in there jamming the lens. Other variations include blowing with a hair dryer in “no heat” setting, or sucking the gaps with a vacuum (careful with this one).

Thank you!

Taking out the battery would do no harm to your pictures. Also in some models of cameras you can force it to shut down by holding the power button for 10 seconds. Might be worth a try . If not you can always remove the battery.

Lense stuck out - camera powers on only briefly then stops - hear one "bing". Tried removing battery - does nothing with cable power only.

1. Clean the battery contacts. a. Remove the battery/batteries and the memory card from your camera, then wipe the battery contacts with a soft, clean cloth. b. Reinstall the battery/batteries into your camera. Please make sure that you are installing a fresh/ fully charged battery c. Turn the camera on. 2. Without the memory card, turn your camera on. (If it works then it?s your memory card that is faulty) 3. Please test with the a different battery If you do not have access to another battery Try these steps instead: Please take the battery out of the camera. b. Insert the charger into the unit from the main socket and turn the camera on. If the camera works you will need to replace the battery. If you camera doesn?t switch on you will need to order a no power repair with KODAK or a new cable. Zoom out and it shuts down

Don't think you'll have to send it in for repair. How old is your battery? Keep in mind that it isn't meant to last for more than a year or two, regardless of how often it is used. A camera will automatically shut down if its battery power is getting low. This usually occurs when the camera is doing power intensive actions, such as zooming (it uses a motor). Anyways, Amazon has some generic options for you if your battery may be over-the-hill:

After some really frustrating hours on Internet I managed to solve the problem myself. 1.Connect the camera to your pc and let it charge. 2.Switch on the camera and let it be detected by the pc. 3.Pull the USB out while you leave the camera switched on. 4.Put the camera on preview mode (the triangle |>) 5. now you can reset. Good luck, Angelo.

Zoom and camera shuts off

Verify you have the right kind of battery and fully charge it.
The lense issue you describe commonly happens when the device cannot access enough power to function correctly, so it retracts and powers off to avoid getting your lense stuck in the 'out' position if the battery goes dry.
