The video card is integrated into the motherboard on most laptops. Are you sure the inverter for the screen didn't burn out? Does the monitor try to come on, or somewhat light up, when you turn on the computer? That would mean the monitor powered up, but their is not signal coming from the video adapter. If the monitor just appears dead with no "backlight", the inverter, inverter and screen cable, or the screen has probably died.

When connected to my Philips 47PFL7422 tv via HDMI cable I get video but no audio. When connected via the VGA port I get both audio and video,

The VGA cable is strictly just for video so the sound is received thru an analogue (RCA) cable. HDMI is an combined digital link but the video card delivers only the video - you must tell the tv from where to get the sound (use the analogue connection already in place) This is done in the menu.

Probably what you have done is disabled the default video or changed the default video output. If you have both on-board video and an add-on video card, try moving the monitor cable to the other video connector (assuming the hardware for both is functional and you did not install a video card because the on-board video failed).

If you go to the support page on the motherboard manufacturer's website, you should be able to find the manual for your motherboard. In that manual the procedure to reset the BIOS will tell you how to find the jumpers on the motherboard used for that task. Most of the time you pull a jumper off a certain pair of pins and place it on a different pair of pins for ten seconds, then put the jumper back where it was. This is done with the computer turned off.

Another way to do to reset the BIOS to factory defaults is to remove the clock battery, wait about a minute, then put the clock battery back in. You will have to reset the time and date, but that is not usually difficult.

I have a Gateway P-7811-FX and I had crashing issues myself. Two things.....try to find a series of drivers for the video but download several of themnot just the newer ones and experiment. Secondly, These laptops do not do a great job cooling without some help. Update the BIOS if you haven't already and put a 17" laptop cooler under the laptop....get a good one and don't go cheap, a good cooler will halt most of your crashes. I run Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit and Far Cry 2 on max settings now with no issues.
