Question about Zenith Z50PX2D 50 in. Plasma HDTV

1 Answer

My Zenith Z50PX2D has been good for years but now it switches itself off after a few minutes. I can restart with the remote but soon again turns off. It turns off as though someone had switched it off as the I hear the normal off click. If I artifically cool the area with a fan behind where I assume the power supply is, the TV runs better and switches off less often. During the winter and spring it has been perfect, only now in summer it has started to act up. It seems like the overheating of something in the power supply that triggers like a current limit or over heating device? Is there a replacement part I could buy, I am OK with electronic repairs.

Thanks for using FixYa. These kinds of issues in plasmas usually occur after 3-4years.A plasma TV is a very hard working device. From what you have described it seems to be an issue with the power supply board which is the board where all the power cords plugs into.It is working harder than any TV that has been built before, and as a result it produces a lot of heat. 75% of technical problems in plasma TV's are caused by overheating problems. You’ll need to check the power supply board first for any swollen/bulged capacitors. As you are OK with electronic repairs then you can check the power supply board for bulged capacitors and replace them with the same one. Please do accept the solution if the issue is resolved or post a comment for further assistance.

Thanks

Thanks, very helpful. One more question. If I choose to replace the suspected power supply PCB can you advise where to buy one?
    Thanks. RoyLMcG

TURN ON TV AND IT TURNS ITSELF OFF

There can be several causes for this, few of which you can do anything about. However, a few things to try:

1) Replace the batteries on your remote control.
2) Try resetting the logic functions on your tv by unplugging it for a minute, then plugging it back in.
3) Try covering up the infra-red receptor on the front of your TV to see if you're getting unwanted signals from the receptor. taping a piece of foil over that area is perfect. If it doesn't stop after doing these two things you'll probably need to take it to a shop.
4) If this does stop it, then look for unexpected signal sources. Have you added a remote control extender? Added a new device to your audio-video system? Changed to a new remote?

I hope this helps. Joe

Remote not turning the Zenith Plasma Display Panel TV on/off.

the remotes are usually multi function .. that is, they can control more than just the TV .. make sure TV mode is selected ... if its in VCR mode or Cable or whatever then it wont control the TV .. if its a programmable remote then it may have lost its program and would have to be set up again ... if its the original that came with the tv then that shouldnt happen . once in a while but not often i see a bad LED (at the tip of the remote) ... those are infra red so you cant see the light beam but a digital camera can .. point the remote at the digital camera and you should see the LED flashing in the cameras viewer when a button on the remote is pushed ...

I had that problem several times with my Z50, I would cut it off, wait and it would fix itself. Now today, it went POP! Complete loss of video, I have audio. I am off the warranty period. I feel very alone now.

dont get mad like i did, report this problem to zenith, they seem to be aware of the problem with this particular model.
i gave them the model number and they requested the purchase date, then extended the warranty and gave a number for a local repair shop which came for my set a couple days ago.
so far so good. it may be a while until i know whether the repairs will work, however hats off to zenith, so far, which seems to be providing appropriate customer service and standing by their expensive products.

Check your input connections, especially the HDMI (if in use). I have found through personal experience that the weight of the cable and any small vibration can be enough to loosen the connection and leave you a blank screen. The manufacturers would have been smarter to have all the inputs face toward the floor at the bottom of the set (like the power cord). Anyone who has mounted their set to the wall will understand what I am saying.
That being said, you may be better off saving your money and buying a new LCD TV. The Zenith sets have proved to be a ticking bomb. If you Google "pop" and "z50px2d" you will read a number of posts on various boards that indicate that the Zenith plasmas have about a 2 year life expectancy before they are in need of some very expensive service. And frequently even after they are serviced are prone to further failure.
Someone pointed out to me not to long ago a valid fact: LCD technology has been around since the pocket calculator and therefore much less prone to unexpected failure than the relatively new plasma technology. I just wish someone had told me that 2 years ago when I ponied up $3000 for my Zenith z50px2d that blew out a few days ago.
