Question about HP Photosmart C7180 All-In-One InkJet Printer

1 Answer

I bought new cartridges and installed correctly. Now all color cartridge work well except the black one. I contacted HP tech, and tried any possible solutions they recommended, such as Reset, cleaning printhead, cleaning the black cartridge. The aligning process failed because the black doesn't come out. So I am wondering what else I can do. Thanks.

having same problem....black print has a white space through it.....after many emails with HP, they told me it is a hardware issue, and I need to have printer repaired or send it in and get a discount on a refurbished printer. I am looking at other printers. It happened suddenly, and we do not abuse or overuse our printer. VERY unhappy. Let me know if you found a solution other than throwing it in the trash.

Keeps saying insert colour cartridge when we have just bought a new cartridge of correct spec. Says incorrect colour cartridge installed.Impossible to get past!!!

Hi,The most common reason for missing or incorrect colors is a print cartridge with one of the following problems:
  • One or more of the ink colors is empty. The black ink and all three colors of ink in the tri-color cartridge must be available or colors will be incorrect or missing. Under normal usage, the print cartridge will run low on one color of ink shortly before all ink colors are emptied.
  • The protective tape is not removed from a new cartridge.
  • Contacts on the cartridge are not making proper contact with the print carriage.
  • The cartridge is remanufactured or refilled.
  • The cartridge is defective.

Supported HP Inkjet cartridge part numbers The HP Officejet 4100 all-in-one series products use the ink cartridges listed in the table below. HP Inkjet cartridges HP 56 black cartridge (19 ml) HP 57 tri-color cartridge (17 ml) HP 28 tri-color cartridge (8 ml) Replacing the ink cartridgesThe power must be turned ON to the all-in-one or the print carriage will not move to the right.

  2. Press down gently on the top of the old ink cartridge to release it from the print carriage. Figure 2: Removing an ink cartridgec00121090.jpg
  3. Remove the new print cartridge from its packaging and remove the protective tape from the cartridge as shown in Figure 3. Do not touch the gold-colored contacts. Figure 3: Removing the cartridge tapec00121091.jpg
  4. Holding the ink cartridge with the printed label up, slide the cartridges one at a time into the print carriage and press them into position as shown in Figure 4. If the cartridge does not snap easily into position, it is not aligned correctly. Remove the cartridge and reposition it. Do not try to force the cartridge into position. The black ink cartridge (HP #56) goes on the right side and the color cartridge (HP #57 or HP #28) goes on the left side. Close the ink cartridge access door when the ink cartridge has been installed. Figure 4: Installing the ink cartridgesc00121092.jpg
  5. A message will appear on the front panel requesting that the ink cartridges be aligned. Follow the steps below to align the ink cartridges:
    1. Press Enter on the all-in-one front panel to start the ink cartridge alignment process.
    2. After the Alignment page prints, place the page into the ADF upside down and with the printed side down as is shown in Figure 5.
    3. Press Enter. The all-in-one will scan the alignment page and finish aligning the cartridges.

Correcting error messages that appear after changing a cartridgeAfter inserting the cartridge, the Check Print Cartridge light flashes or one of the following messages appears on the computer monitor:
  • Check the black (or color) cartridge
  • Replace the black (or color) cartridge
  • The wrong black (or color) cartridge is installed
These messages indicate that the ink cartridge is not making good electrical contact, is bad, or is the wrong cartridge. Complete the following steps to diagnose and correct the condition:
  1. Open the front of the unit to access the print cartridges (as shown in Figure 1).
  2. Remove the ink cartridge and inspect it.
  3. Verify that it is the correct part number and if it is, reinsert it.
  4. Close the lid to see if the problem is corrected.
  5. If the message is still displayed after a few seconds, remove the ink cartridge again.
  6. Unplug the power cord from the back of the unit.
  7. Clean the electrical contacts on the ink cartridge with a soft clean cloth slightly dampened (not wet) with clean water. (See Figure 6) Each contact is very small and shaped like a rounded square. Figure 6: Cleaning the cartridge contactsc00121094.jpg
  8. Allow the ink cartridge to dry for a few minutes before reinserting the cartridge(s) and turning on the printer.
  9. If the problem remains, replace the ink cartridge.
  10. If the problem still exists after trying all of the steps above, the unit may need to be serviced. Contact HP for further troubleshooting or to arrange to have the unit serviced.

Black catridge printing is not working

Hi Aravind,

Are you using a refill cartridge? It would be best to allign after installing the cartridges?

Since most cartridges today have electronic contacts on them, if you dirtied them before installing the cartridge, it is possible that this could affect the performance, you might want to take the cartridge out and clean the contacts with rubbing alcohol.

Also, the alignment of the print heads may need to be adjusted, my hp requires this to make sure the color and black line up properly, otherwise you get a blurry image.

Furthermore, if the problem is with the color cartridge and you are trying to print a page of black letters and the printer is set to use colors, it may try to print the black using all of the colors instead of using the black cartridge. So you may need to clean the color cartridge as well. Try looking at the printing properties and making sure black is selected when printing something that is only text and see if it does it correctly then.
Good Luck!

The printer doesn't recognize the new original HP color cartridge

There is a small spring that holds the ink cartridge in the ink holder. You will see it stick out from the right hand side of the ink holder where the ink cartridge slides in. If that spring isn't being held to the ink holder by two plastic tabs, (I.E. the plastic tabs are broken) the printer will never recognize the cartridge. If the printer is still under warranty I would contact HP or an authorized repair center for HP. Both the black and color ink holder has this spring. I know of no way to repair this kind of breakage.

How do I install an ink cartridge? HP photosmart c5280 All in one

To replace the print cartridges Perform the following steps to replace the print cartridges:
  1. Make sure the HP All-in-One is on. CAUTION: If the HP All-in-One is off when you open the print cartridge door to access the print cartridges, the HP All-in-One will not release the cartridges for changing. The HP All-in-One can get damaged if the print cartridges are not docked safely when trying to remove them.
  2. Open the print cartridge door. The print carriage moves to the far right side of the HP All-in-One. Figure 1: Opening the print cartridge door c00956268.gif
  3. Wait until the print carriage is idle and silent, and then lightly press down on a print cartridge to release it. If replacing the tri-color print cartridge, remove the print cartridge from the slot on the left. Figure 2: Removing the print cartridge from the slot c00956269.gif 1 - Tri-color print cartridge slot 2 - Black and photo print cartridges slot
  4. Pull the print cartridge toward you out of its slot.
NOTE: Remove the black print cartridge to install the photo or gray photo print cartridge, and store the black print cartridge in the print cartridge protector or an airtight plastic container.
  5. Remove the new print cartridge from its packaging, and carefully remove the black plastic tape by using the pink pull tab Figure 3: Removing the new print cartridge from its packaging c00956270.gif 1 - Copper-colored contacts 2 - Plastic tape with pink pull tab (must be removed before installing) 3 - Ink nozzles under tape CAUTION: Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or ink nozzles. Also, do not re-tape the print cartridges. Doing so can result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections. Figure 4: Do not touch the copper-colored contacts c00956271.gif
  6. Hold the print cartridge with the HP logo on top, and insert the new print cartridge into the empty cartridge slot. Make sure to push the print cartridge firmly until it snaps into place. If installing the tri-color print cartridge, slide it into the left slot. If installing a black, photo, or gray photo print cartridge, slide it into the right slot. Figure 5: Installing the print cartridge c00956272.gif
  7. Close the print cartridge door. Figure 6: Closing the print cartridge door. c00956273.gif HP All-in-One prints a print cartridge alignment page if a new print cartridge is installed.
  8. When prompted, ensure plain white paper is loaded in the input tray, and then press OK .
  9. The HP All-in-One prints a test page, aligns the print head, and calibrates the printer. Recycle or discard the page. A success or failure message appears.
NOTE: If colored paper is loaded in the input tray when aligning the print cartridges, the alignment will fail. Load unused plain white paper into the input tray, and then try the alignment again. If the alignment fails again, you might have a defective sensor or print cartridge. Colored Ink problem

Make sure you are using the correct cartridges for the Z35. They should be #26 (color) and #16 (black).

Make sure the contacts are clean where the cartridge connects to the printer electrically. A little alcohol wipe is good for this. Clean contacts on both the cartridge and the carrier in the printer.

Contact problems normally result from not pressing hard enough on the top front of the cartridge during their installation.

(Note: Firmly install, but gently)

It is possible that your contact(s) inside the printer are dirty but it is "NOT recommended to touch these contacts as they are delicate and can be easily broken/bent.

If this problem continues to happen with OEM cartridges investigate if the printer is still under warranty and ask for a replacement printer.

If this only happens with third party cartridges, investiagte using an other manufactuers products.

Remove and check color cartridge

This is not a joke! I've owned 3 premier HP ink-jet printers and each one broke under extremely suspicious circumstances. They provide a very limited amount of use time, and their cartridges are severely OVERPRICED!

I believe that anyone reading this should look at their HP, and replace it with a "Brother", "Lexmark", "Kodak", or other reputable company that provides a "DURIBLE" product.

HP is a huge brand name, and they have established themselves for their ease of use. But a printer is not a pair of shoes that should be changed every year or 2. They are poorly constructed, and they get back every penny you save on them by overcharging on the ink.

HP should PAY for betraying their costumers trust, and simply "Lose" their customers! Kodak is better anyways! HP is a second rate product with first rate "BRAND RECOGNITION".
