It is indeed a virus. This is one that I come across quite often.

What I tend to do is start with a boot CD from here.
http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/

This CD should be downloaded and burnt on a known CLEAN computer.

Once you have that start your computer and if it has a boot menu option during start up use that to boot from the CD otherwise you will need to tell the BIOS to start from CD first.

When the computer has booted from the CD you will see the various options for anti-virus and antispyware etc. use each of those programs in turn until you have run them all.

Between each program you need to re-start your computer and boot from the CD again.

Once you are done it should be safe to boot from the hard drive again.

Hopefully this will have left you with a now WORKING computer.
First thing to do is then to get on-line and use the search term "on-line anti-virus scan" and start again using ESET, NORTON KASPERSKY each individual.

Then download and install MBAM
http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

Download and install the FREE version and run it and let it clean up anything it finds.

Your documents etc should all be safe using the method above.

If you are no worried about your data then a re-install of the operating system is another option but please use the FORMAT option when doing the install and DON'T use the quick format option

Hope that helps out

Bob.

Could be a virus that deleted things and left just shortcuts is what it sounds like, Best thing to do here is run system restore or system recovery disk that came with the computer.

Click start
Accessories
System tools
Then system restore

If that does nto work your going to need the recovery disk that came with the computer, Thanks for you rintrest in fixya please do rate your free answer today.

Itunes cannot open . error code is -50. even after reinstalling everything new.

Do you have Norton Security? It could be blocking it.
Uninstall Norton and try AVG antivirus. Norton is a horrible program, I've had bad experiences.
Or disable any antivirus or firewall you have and try running iTunes.
Or try this.
1. Go to Control Panel --> Add or Remove Programs --> iTunes --> Remove
...uninstall the program completely and restart your computer
2. Go to Control Panel --> Add or Remove Programs --> QuickTime --> Remove
...uninstall the program completely and restart your computer
3. Go to My Computer --> Local Disc --> Program Files. Once in Program Files you will see the iTunes and QuickTime folder and you will want to delete the iTunes folder and the QuickTime folder. Right click on the iTunes folder and select delete and confirm the deletion. Do the same for QuickTime.
4. Restart your computer
5. Disable all features of any anti-virus program such as Norton or McAfee
6. Open Internet Explorer or which ever internet program you use and go to http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/ and download the iTunes+QuickTime program. *Do not do any modifications in the download of the program.* Just download the program by doing the usual "Next" clicking.
7. Once iTunes is finished downloading, double click on the Shortcut Icon on the desktop. iTunes should open with a large square box and you have to click "Agree."
Should be good to go.

I need to uninstall Micosoft Intrnet Explorer so that I can reinstall IE7. I keep getting s message that a more recent one is on my computer but I cannot find it to ubinstall it.

Click "Start" then "Control Panel" --> "Add/Remove Programs" --> "Add/Remove Windows Components" --> click the "Internet Explorer" and uncheck it, click "Next" wait for few seconds until the uninstallation is finished and click "finish" when done. Close the windows and now open, "My Computer" -- > "C:" drive --> then "Program Files" and locate "Internet Explorer" and delete the folder. Now restart your computer and repeat the same procedure from "Start" then "Control Panel" --> "Add/Remove Programs" --> "Add/Remove Windows Components" --> click the "Internet Explorer" and uncheck it, click "Next" wait for few seconds until the uninstallation is finished and click "finish" when done. That should work. Even if you don't repeat the steps, by default, windows Xp has the Internet Explorer 7 with it.

If you need further help, let me know.

Good luck.

Please explain what is meant when a person requests me to "open your browser" Where is it? on my computer? Thanks Carol

Applications like Internet Explorer, Firefox, Googlechrome are called Browsers. When you are asked to open the browser, it simply means to open any of the above mentioned application, maybe Internet explorer or firefox or googlechrom etc..... etc.. When you are asked to do so, just double click the application or open it from the "All Programs" by clicking "Start" on your "desktop"

If you need further help, let me know.

Good luck.

Everytime I try to open an application, itunes opens instead.

Uninstall iTunes -- it's _free_ software, so it can be re-installed later.

Then, open My Documents, and double-click on a file (a Word document, an Excel spreadsheet, or a PDF file) and see which program Windows chooses to open to "handle" the file that you double-clicked.

I upgraded internet exp 6.0 to 8.0.window not running properly

Judging by the way the problem was handled I can only suggest a re-installation of windows.

You should always use the ADD REMOVE option for programs etc. OR the uninstaller that may have come with it.

Almost all versions of INTERNET explorer integrate with other areas of windows using common DLL files etc.

By deleting it via the programs folder and then deleting windows from linux you may have corrupted the installation of windows itself.

Sorry for the news but thats as I see it.

Problems opening links in Outlook 2003

The most common cause is a corrupt registry key in Internet Explorer. The registry key found at
HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Classes\htmlfile\shell\open\command
is either damaged or corrupt.
To fix it, try resetting Web settings in Internet Explorer. If this does not resolve the issue, set IE as
the default browser.
To Reset Web settings:
Internet Explorer 6
Start Internet Explorer 6.
On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
Click the Programs tab, and then click the Reset Web Settings button.
Under Internet programs, verify that the correct e-mail program is selected.
Click to select the Internet Explorer should check to see whether it is the default browser check box.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
You may receive the following message when Internet Explorer starts:
Internet Explorer is not currently your default browser. Would you like to make it your default browser?
If you receive the message, click Yes.
Internet Explorer 7
Start Internet Explorer 7.
On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
Click the Advanced tab, and then click Reset.
Click the Programs tab, and then click Set programs.
Click Set Default Programs.
Click to select Microsoft Outlook, and then click Set this program as default.
Click OK, and then close the Default Programs dialog box.
In the Internet Options dialog box, click the Programs tab, and then click Make default under Default web browser.
Click OK.
Export and import the registry key from another computer
Important This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
322756 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322756/ ) How to back up and restore the registry in Windows
Note Use this method only if the earlier instructions for each browser do not work to resolve this problem.
Export the registry key from another computer
Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
Locate the following registry key: HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Classes\htmlfile\shell\open\command

Click the command folder.
On the File or Registry menu (depending on your operating system), click Export.
Note the location of where the file will be saved. The registry file can be saved directly to the hard drive or floppy disk.
Type a unique file name, and then click Save.
Quit the Registry Editor.
Import the registry key
Copy the Exported registry key to the desktop on the problem computer.
Double-click the .reg file.
You receive the following message:
Are you sure you want to add the information in drive: location file was copied to\file name.reg to the registry?
Click Yes, and then click OK
