Roper On top freezer.. Developing ice on internal coils.. how do I know if its the auto heater or the thermastate? does not appear to auto defrost..? ice build up in the freezer compartment...

Use an ohmmeter to check the heater element after disconnecting the power to the unit and removing at least one connection from the element,then check for continuity if its good then its more than likely its the defrost control or a bad connection in a wire connection

Roper RT18DKX FW04. Freezer is cold but not freezing anything. Temp is 20 degrees F. Refrigerator is not cold, temp is ~50 degrees. Frost is forming on the back of the freezer.


You have a DEFROST PROBLEM
The evaporator coil behind the cover on the back wall inside the freezer will ice up under normal conditions. Every 8 to 10 hours for around 20 minutes the defrost timer (or in most newer models the electronic adaptive defrost control) will turn the defrost heater on to melt the built up ice. There is a defrost thermostat which prevents the heater from overheating the freezer by breaking the heater circuit when the temp reaches close to 32 degrees F. The entire cooling system shuts off during the defrost cycle and starts back when the timer advances through the cycle.

If this ice is not melted it will continue to build up until the air can't flow over the coil to circulate the cold air through the freezer and into the fridge. The temperature change in the fridge is usually noticed first followed by the freezer.

If the defrost thermostat is bad, it can prevent the heater from coming on OR it won't turn the heater off when it gets too warm. It is clamped to the evaporator coil at the top to sense the temp. If it appears to be misshapen it is bad.
With an ohm meter it should show continuity when cold and none when warm.
You can also bypass(disconnect the two wires plugged into it and twist them together) the thermostat to see if the heater comes on then. If it does then you know the thermostat is bad and needs replaced.

Excess water dripping into refrigerator from freezer. I am in the process of defrosting. Ice build up behind freezer back wall. Do I need a new heater or will clearing the ice from drains suffice?

Clearing the ice build up is a good start,the problem though is the drain pan under the coil in the freezer thats iced up is blocked so when the defrost heater comes on and melts the frost from that coil,it the water is collecting in the freezer and in many cases drips into the fresh food compartment,clearing the drain will resolve your leaking/ice build up issue.THE DEFROST HEATER IS GOOD melting the frost in the first place and hence forth that melted frost stays in the freezer and becomec ice.

Hi, my GE refrigerator has ice developing on the rear wall of the freezer, and things in my crisper drawer are freezing solid,please help!!!!


Unplug refrig. Empty all food from freezer side and remove shelves from freezer. Remove back metal cover from inside freezer. Melt frost with a hair blower. Examine defrost heater at very bottom of the coils you defrosted. If heater coil inside glass tube is broken, replace defrost heater. (note: replacement may look different, but insturctions included with replacement address that) If heater is not broken, replace the small white pencil shapped sensor at the top of the cooling coils.

Freezer stopped working


the freezer and refrigerator work from the same coil. you may be accumulating ice on back panel of freezer. most of times the defrost thermostat is bad.while box is cold check for continuity through defrost thermostat. if good check ohms on heater. if good you should have a standard defrost timer replace it.

No I don't think so. I think you either have a stopped up defrost drain or a bad defrost heater and terminator. Get into the evaporation section and check for ice. If the defrost heater is bad replace the defrost terminator thermostat. Would not be a bad idea to replace the timer or adc (auto defrost control). The fins are coils on the compressor should be clean and the fan motor(if applicable) by the compressor should be running when the compressor is.

Hello, my refrigerator is slowly getting less cold. We just moved in a month ago and in that month the refrigerator has stopped freezing ice and now is just not very cold...Help please?

My fridge isn't that cold despite it being on max but ice keeps building up on the back like the antartic then it melts all over shelves food and floor but the freezer works its and ideset 50/50


Your auto defrost system has failed. This consists of the defrost heater and defrost thermostat located behind the back panel inside the freezer. Take the panel off to see. The third part is the defrost timer. Part 4 on this diagram is your timer. Turn it till the freezer cuts off and then check the heater. It should be hot now. If it is, replace the timer. If it's not the heater is probably bad unless the defrost thermostat clamped to the coils is bad. You can bypass it to see if it's the problem.
