Question about Refrigerators

2 Answers

We have two RB1944SL refrigerators. We bought them on the same day and started using them on the same day. A week apart at the 4 yr old mark they both started having trouble. Once the fridges reach the temps required the whole cooling system shuts down. Then we have to unplug the fridge to re-start the cooling cycle. We replaced the control board and the thermostats. Still does the same thing. We also took them outside and cleaned them. Please help, I love them but need them to work.

The compressor is working. It cools correctly to 36 then stops.

Have you replaced the sensors on these units? This model uses two sensors one in the fridge and one in the freezer to determine the temperatures. Assuming you have replaced the control board located int he door of the fridge and the board in the back, your only possible solution left to a shut down when temp reached situation is the temp sensors. The freezer sensor is located behind the cover inside the freezer compartment.
The fridge sensor is usually accessible through the center round cover in the fridge compartment back wall. you may have to remove the main cover also to un-plug it.
Good luck and let me know if you need any more help on this!!

I understand the compressor is operational and that it gets down to temperature and stops, but if the temp sensor is erratic at colder temperatures it may tell the control that it does not need to run anymore Especially since these models use two sensors, this give all the more room to assume that one of these two sensors is the culprit. If I had to pick only one of the two as the most likely culprit I would take the one in the freezer first as it may be sending a false signal to the control that the evaporator is down below the freezing point permanently.
Good luck and let me know if you have any more questions. Also I am an authorized servicer so if needed I can contact the factory service team and quiz them further for you if the sensor replacement does not solve this issue.

On both units I replaced the control board in the back and the sensor inside the refrigerator. I also replaced the sensor inside the freezer on 1 of the units. What do you think I still need to do then? They are both doing the same thing. They cool down to 38 on the fridge and -4 on the freezer and then stop cooling. The fridges has gotten up to 60 and the freezers to 40 before we remember to flip them off and back on. As soon as they come back on they start to cool down again.

No one is talking to me. I posted a reply but never heard back. This thing keeps asking me if I accept the answer but I didn't get one.

Sorry for not replying back, unfortunately i am not on here 24 hours a day and if we don't correspond when we are posting, it may take a bit to communicate via the premium assistance.

So if you have changed the sensors in both the refrigerator and the freezer the ONLY thing left that can possibly be causing this issue is the temp control on the front of the door. The sensors communicate directly with board on the front of the fridge and then to the rear control board to turn on the compressor as needed.

I am going to post a link to the service manual for this unit also, look at the section on self diagnostics and see if you can get the unit to display a fault code (page 23 and 24)

Let me know if you have any further questions or problems, I will try to get back to you as quickly as possible!

I did the self diagnostic test on both fridges. The refrigerators both displayed 00 on the freezer and 0 on the fridge. I can't find a code like this on pages 23 or 24. Any ideas?

I did the Component Load test in both. On both freezers we got a and b and on 1 fridge we got a only. The other 1 had no LED.

Again with incorrect values being displayed on diagnostics, I have to go back to the temp display/user interface board as being the culprit. There must be some corrupted software on that board if you can't even get it to display correct diagnostic info.
    Change the board.
Good luck and let me know how you make out.

Hi, since you have checked and replace the control board and thermostat and the problem still persist, Check the relay starter near the compressor to make sure it's working and the compressor it self.

Take care

Hi, if it cools correctly to 36 then stops, then the problem is with the relay starter.

    Take care

Kenmore Coldspot mod 106 refrigerator shut down 2 weeks ago, started on its own 4 days later,3 days after that dead again

could be several problems, i would begin by checking to see if the compressor is actually running, if it is you will feel heat and vibration, if not running check the defrost timer or the compressor start device. if you are unfamiliar with what i am asking, call for service.
Sears offers a Service Smart Agreement for around 300 that will include necessary repair now and 1 yr warrenty.

im not sure what reset button you are using / but cleaning it out was good . and if it started running that was good. when it quit the third time . things that would cause this could be the cold control / very common / and at 15 yr old i would replace the compressor relay . that starts it . sometime you can hear it clicking or humming . 4 yr old Top Mount Frigidaire freezer is not freezing

Even after you had unplugged and started if the fridge is not cooling well then the compressor is not having the right pressure for the heat exchange. The possible problem can be fault in the compressor or lack of gas in the system. check if the compressor motor speed is fine and pumping well, need to use a current test witth a clamp tester. If not check on the contacter relay, the capapcitor. If ok the gas pressure must be checked or refilled. I hope you can follow this out and try. Good day,

Good day,
The first step is to remove the rear panel in the freezer compartment. If the coil is completely frosted over, blocking air flow, then the defrost has failed. If only part of the coil has a buildup, then it is usually a refrigerant leak, a serious problem.

The defrost system is made up of 3 parts. The heater and defrost thermostat (as long as it is below 30 degrees ) can be checked with an ohm meter. The thermostat should read zero ohms, the heater less than 30 ohms.
The third item is the defrost control. It can be either a standard timer or an adaptive control (solid state).

Below is an excellent tutorial on defrost systems.

Kenmore refrigerator leak

I have an Amana refirgerator with a top freezer and had the same problem. I turned off BOTH the frig and the freezer for 24 hours. That allowed every thing to dry out. It has been running now for a week with no problem.
