There are usually flats above the head to use a special flat wrench to hold it with.

Or take the engine off and hold the shaft very carefully not to scar it

According to Pivotrim, it will fit your trimmer, BUT...
I can see your dilemma here.
Here is a link to the installation tips page for your type of trimmer: http://www.pivotrimhelp.com/Installation/Default.aspx
It is recommended for your model to use "Installation Method 3", here is the instructional video:
Now, It does look like the threaded, exposed end is a bit short. From personal experience with this model of trimmer, I found that the entire shaft would slip out overtime form the motor housing. With an allan key, you can loosen the joint where the shaft meets the motor housing near the throttle control. When loosened ensure that the shaft is as far up as it can go, then tighten again.

Hope this helps.

How do I remove the spoolhead so as to afix the pivotrim head

I installed the Pivo trim head yesterday. The info that came with the unit will show you how to install it on ANY Weed Eater Unit. Also they have videos on their web site at: https://pivotrim.com/

Look on the end of the shaft of your weed eater at the head. Mine was a 25cc Poulan/weed eater SST45 and it has a hole that you need to stick a HEX KEY in so the shaft does not move when you try to remove it. ALSO it has a BACKWARDS THREAD!!! So "Right is NOT Tight." Left is to tighten and turn towards the right to get the head to unscrew so you can put on the Pivotrim Head. Also you can use ANY Weed Eater line on the unit. As I tried several different lines and found different uses for different lines. Such as edging and trimming against fences. Best after Market Weed Eater head I have EVER used. :-)

Enjoy! :-D

It depends on your model. You can visit the PIVOTRIM website and they show how to install their head on most units which includes how to take your old one off. Their website is http://www.pivotrim.com
Otherwise you need to look at your operators manual or call the manufacturer.
