hello. the most probable cause for a ps3 not turning on is broken power supply. my advice is to bring to your nearest sony service center. especially if your console is still under warranty. fixing it yourself might void the warranty. but if you still want to do it yourself buy yourself a power supply that is compatible with your console (40GB ps3=40GB ps3 power supply) here a link on how to open your ps3 http://www.llamma.com/PS3/repair/PS3_disassembly_tutorial.htm but remember, do this at your own risk. still the best way is to bring it to a service center. hope this helps
the laser used to read the discs is fried, you need to order a new one from ebay and replace it, alot of the older ps3's have the issue, ive gone through 3 myself in the last few years since ps3 came out. its an easy job to do a few small screws to open playstation and just simply remove old laser unit and replace with new one.
if the power indicator was flashing red and green probably means it was overheating. if thats the case it either fried its self or turned its self off. let it rest for an hour then try and turn it back on if it doesnt turn on its probably fried
The eye in the tray might be scratched or damaged. This happens with age and the way the Playstation has been setting as well. It is more likely to wear out faster when it is standing upright. Try to play a movie or a game with the playstation in the horizontal way. If not the eye could possibly be damaged beyond repair.
Your laser has probably gone bad. I see this at least once a day in my store. Either over time it just stopped working, or you have shut it off by flipping the switch in the back. Doing so will fry the laser. You will need to replace the laser. If your under warranty, (Which I'm assuming your not considering your posting on here), send it in to Sony. If not, check your local game stores to see if they do console repairs.
