There are two ways to do that:
If you have a floppy drive attached or you may attach to your lap then.

  1. Goto your Motherboard manufacturer's site and download AHCI driver.
  2. Expand this file (it may be auto extract or zipped) in to floppy disk.
  3. Then start setup normally, keep constant eye on bottom of setup screen you will find a message like 'Press F6 for third party RAID driver'
  4. At that time press F6.
  5. Setup will ask you for the floppy, insert that floppy in the drive and follow the instructs.......

If you don't have floppy drived attached to your lap then.
  1. download the driver and expand it in any folder.
  2. use nlite software to split the driver in windows setup disk.
  3. burn the new splittered setup to cd.
  4. run setup from that CD that will read your SATA drive.
If any problem just Ask me.
Thanks
Iqbal

You should download the drivers BEFORE you change the OS and maybe put them on a flash drive or burn them to a CD.

You can get them direct from the DELL site.

It maybe that your XP disc does not recognise a SATA drive and for that reason you should use the F6 option whilst booting from the XP setup disk and point it to the CD or flash drive.

From then on you should be able to format the disck.

Some of the dells are a little tricky that way.

You may also have to change the bios option as for sata type
I have had to do this on a few dell laptops.to down grade from vista to XP

download servicepack three for the latest sata and raid drivers. until you get the driver for the new raid drive, windows wont see it. you can also put ubuntu as a second op sys from inside windows, and it should work in ubuntu. if it does than its a driver issue. this should update the pb drivers, the device itself doesnt require one to work in xp, so it must be the computer that is the issue.....try updating your sata and raid drivers for the controller that came on the PB

Cannot access bios or find c:\ drive model Freevents X56 windows XP media center edition 2005

If you wish to change some setting in BIOS, you can try the alternative method to access its properties.
Go to Start --> Open Run --> Type in msconfig
Here you can change the boot timing and Normal, Selective or Diagnostic Startup.
Also disable the startup applications. For BIOS go to update as per your Motherboard and Computer configuration from Microsoft website and MoBo Website.

Reinstalling XP with a new HDD?

Make a clean installation of XP with prior formating the Hard Disk Partition (where you are goint to install it)

For the driver issue, I am not sure if you have all drivers for your MOBO. (included in MoBo CD) and the driver for LAN Card, VGA or other devices drivers.

Let me know in bit more detail of other drivers which you have and have not? Try surfing the website to locate the exact drivers and most of driver you will get with optimum cost.
Such as download.com or FileHippo.com
