SOURCE: Ice maker overflows with water
yes, in fact the icemaker does meter the amount of water delivered to the icemaker, the valve should only be energized for 7 seconds. after that the power is cut off, so if valve continues to let water flow, it's bad (might have debris from water line keeping it open. unserviceable. )

There is nothing wrong with the icemaker if infact it is "overflowing". Be carefull not to confuse "overflowing" with the ice maker leaking. Nevertheless, if the icemaker is "overflowing" with water and is still making "BIG" ice cubes then you need to replace the water valve located behind the refrigerator in the compressor department. Hint: it is blue.... Also, you may want to hire an appliance person to do this for you. Should cost around $200 to have fixed.... goodluck..
Note: If you determine that the icemaker is not "overflowing" but instead is "leaking" water then you need to replace icemaker instead of water valve. One more tid bit of information for you, Its bad when I can look at the model number and know EXCATLY what your fridge looks like! This GE fridge will give you cooling problems in the near future. Turn off during thunderstorms, too many flicker's of electricty will burn up the computer board on your fridge costing you around $400 big ones.. When the ice maker calls for water it pours for about 7 seconds if more will overflow and the problem is in the ice maker board but if pours water for nomore than 7 seconds and still overflow it means that was extra water in the ice maker ,that means that the dual water valve(located in the bottom back of the refrigerator) is leaking and needs to be replaced.

I have had a similar problem several times. What I have found is that the ice tray coating has begun to flake off. Then, the ice sticks or partially dumps. Next more ice builds up and when the valve opens the water runs over the partially emptied tray and spills into the bin making "icebergs". The remedy is to replace the tray or if that is not possible, then, the whole icemaker. In fact, I have one down stairs to put in tomorrow. They don't seem to last more than about 4 years or so.
