This unit requires separate AC power. If the blue light is not on to begin with - indicating power, no PC will be able to read the USB. There is a hard disc in the unit that needs to spin...it is not solid state like a thumb drive.

Xp not recognizing my 250gb WD passport

The Western Digital My Passport line, besides the Essential Series, is originally formated for a Mac (in the HFS+ format) and as such cannot be read by Windows PCs. You can either get a program to read the External such as Macdrive, or format it to NTFS or FAT32; formats that are readable by Windows. I would recommend formatting it to NTFS, because you can only transfer up to 4 Gigabyte files to FAT32, while NTFS is nearly limitless.

Sounds like either physical damage occurred from the drop or a fatal write error occurred when the drive disconnected. you should try a drive analysis tool like Spinrite to see if the drive is damaged. If not then you may be able to recover the drive and data using spinrite or simply wipe the partition and rebuild the drive.

My simpletech drive is showing on my iMac but I am unable to write any files to it. It says I can only "read" but it does not alow me to change the access.

These things come formatted for PCs--you have to go into Utilities on your mac (in hard drive click on Applications, Utilities folder, then Disk Utility, then click on the simpletech (that has the gb next to it), click on the drop down to change the format (MS-DOS if you want to read on both PCs and MAC, but MAC-OS for just Macs) re-name it on the drop down below that, then click on erase and then it's re-formatted.

What file format does the wd pasport(80gig) use?

It can use either the NTFS or FAT32.

NTFS is the standard for most PCs today.

FAT32 will only read 32 gigs on the disk if used.

But the hard drive will use both, you just have to choose which one you want.

Sometimes FAT32 has been known to cause read issues with XP. Vista, use NTFS for sure!

They can also be formatted to Mac standards as well...

Only showing as a network device on 2 of the 3 pcs on the network

Did u added the new network devices, or did u wait till thy popped up?
If u didn't added them manually, then go to networklocations, add network location, press next, and again next, then type in \\mybookworld\"here the name of the folder of your mybook, ex. Movies or music,.." (without " ")

Do it for every folder.

Dropped a WD passport drive, now it won't load. HELP!

Unfortunately, these drives are not made to be dropped.

It sounds like it was damaged by the drop which could have rendered the read/write heads inoperable or mis-aligned.

Contact Western Digital for a warranty replacement.
