I need to get into my gateway and interigate my wireless sttings so as I can retrieve the pass phrase so I can connct wirelesley from my laptop?

The passphrase is stored in your router. You will need the passcode to connect to your router. Usually the passcode is located on a sticker in the back of your router on a sticker. If not, you will need to log into your router to retrieve it.

- first make sure the driver is properly installed by right clicking my computer > manage > device manager > look under network adapter
- second make sure the wireless is turned on (there should be a small light below the touchpad with a antenna symbol.)
- third check which utility is used to connect to the wireless network (if the computer is using the built it one to windows or a third party wireless utility. you can usually check this by checking the icons on the bottom left hand corner of the screen. if you have more than one icon for the wireless network that usually means you have a utility that is controlling the wireless)
- try to connect to the wireless network using the wireless utility (you need to know the SSID or network name and if the network is secured you will also need the pass key or pass phrase.
- If you dont know the wireless key and SSID you can check the router itself by hardwiring to the netgear > opening a browser > on the address bar type in the gateway address (you can check this by opening a command prompt window start>run>type cmd and typing in the command ipconfig in the command prompt window, the default gateway will be listed),

this will show you how to get your passphase as long as you know the login/pass to your router.

I'm assuming you want to know what the WPA passcode is so you can connect to your network to get online Xbox 360?

It will be the wireless password you use to get on the internet with a laptop of sorts. If you have a 2wire gateway/modem its on the bottom of the modem in brackets usually. I'd check to see who setup your wireless router and they'll be able to get you the passcode for your wireless.

Please follow the steps in order to retrieve the security code:

1. Click Start \ Run \ type cmd and hit enter
2. In the black window type ipconfig and hit enter.
3. Note down the default gateway and close this window.
4. Open the web browser and type the default gateway and hit enter.
5. If you have not changed the default password then type admin as password and leave the username blank.
6. In the router setup page click Wireless and then click Wireless Security.
7. Note down the pass phrase or the shared key.

You can use the key to connect the wireless devices with the router.

WPA with a Pre-Shared Key (PSK), also known as personal. PSK is entered as a pass phrase between 8 to 63 alphanumeric characters in the ASCII format at both ends of the wireless connection. Although PSK accepts a minimum of eight characters, for proper security, it is a good idea to use ample length and should not use a commonly known phrase. This phrase is used to generate session keys that are unique for each wireless client.

WPA pass phrase is a password for the wireless network to make it secured. You can obtain the WPA pass phrase when you access your router. Check the manual of your router for the address, username and password of your router. Go to wireless settings, you will see ther the SSID or Network Name, Network Key or the Pass Phrase and Authentication (WPA/WPA2/WEP). You can personalize the SSID,Network Key and Authentication. Remeber that for you to connect wirelessly the Authentication and Network Key on the router should match the Network Key and Authentication of the Printer or Computer.

I'm thinking modem/router combination. first power down modem and router. Then leaving router unplugged, power up modem, make sure it's sync up then power up router. If this is a wireless connection search for your networks name on computer/laptop..ie View wireless connection. Windows allows a automatic setup if the wireless connection is unsecured. If it is secured Windows 7 will prompt a pass phrase/ or access code. Good luck. Repeat process if necessary

You set your security by enabling WEP.

When you get in the interface to configure WEP, set a pass phrase. Write down the 3 numeric keys it generates. Then connect to the wireless using your laptop, etc. When it asks for your passkey, do not enter the pass-phrase; enter one of the three keys that were generated by the router. That's the biggest mistake people make when trying to get wireless to work.

I am assuming by access key your are referring to the pass phrase. The easiest way to approach this would be to use a cable to connect directly to the router from your laptop and confirm the wireless configuration on the router. You may have the pass phrase correct by the router is using WEP and your laptop is set to WPA or visa versa. Confirm the wireless configuration on the router then unplug the laptop from the router and change the configuration for you wireless settings on the laptop.

You can track their mac address, but will not be able to detect where they are accessing it from. The best way to defend against unwanted guests is to secure the connection with a passphrase. You will need to log into your router, go into wireless settings, security, and choose between wpa and wep encryption. I suggest wpa personal, then choose a pass phrase that only you will remember. In order to connect to your wireless router, the pass phrase will have to be entered.
