Question about Siemens HB77L25GB 900 Watts Convection / Microwave Oven

Open Question

When i use the microwave there are flashes of lights and a burning smell. i got a siemens engineer to come and look at it. He said it's because its not been cleaned properly however the oven walls are clean and the only dirty area is beneath the top grate which i can't get to. I asked him how i would clean it since you can't remove it and he said oven cleaner yet in the manual it tells you not to use this. He said he could clean it but the cost was almost the same as a new one. I'm not very happy with the service and I don't see how given the design I'd have been able to avoid this problem??? Of course I even had to pay the Siemens engineer for this 10minute visit. Any advice?? thanks stacey

SOURCE: my Siemens HF87950GB inner glass panel broke

This is a problem that at least a few others have experienced with your microwave and may be the subject of a recall although I could find nothing on their website.
I would definitely go to Siemens first as this definitely sounds like a manufacturers defect. Even if they have not publicly stated this in a recall, they likely know it is happening and may fix it (even out of warranty) if you push. ConsumerReports.org may be interested... I would talk to them if you don't get any satisfaction from Siemens.
Otherwise, the glass should be standard tempered glass that a local glass shop can get if you bring the door to them, or just a sample of the broken glass (for thickness) along with the internal dimensions of the glass.
Make sure that the metal mesh/screen remains in place and is not damaged, as this is what prevents the microwaves from escaping the cooking chamber.

Microwave smell like burning rubber

Good Afternoon Friend,

I understand that you are receiving a burning rubber smell from your Frigidaire microwave. I also see that your appliance will run for a couple of seconds, and then you hear a weird noise, followed by a burning rubber smell. I suggest contacting your local authorized technician, especially when dealing with your microwave. They will be able to diagnose your appliance and determine what is causing that sound as well as the burning rubber smell. Hope this is helpful.

-Best Regards-
WP

Have ge profile spacesaver xl sensor. will not heat strange buzzing sound and burning smell. clock, light, vent still work

This is most likely a defective magnetron, especially with the burning smell. There are two other parts that can be a problem, the high voltage capacitor and diode, all three work together to heat food. If the magnetron is the culprit, probably cheaper to replace the microwave oven.

Burning smell microwave

The burning smell is most likely the rectifier burning. Look for a rectanguler black thing connecting from one lead of the capacitor to ground.

Burn at bottom of microwave

First try cleaning the burned mark off. Dip a scrubber in lemon juice and sprinkle salt on it; this is also great for burned coffee pots. The smell can be gotten rid of this way: Boil lemon peel in water, then put the water in a spray bottle. Not only will it make your microwave smell fresh but the lemon oil will make it easier to clean. If it still smells of burning rubber, take the back off and inspect the wiring. IF you see burned wiring, please do yourself a favor and replace the microwave!

Microwaves work by making the molecules in food get "excited"-they move more-meaning, if there IS rubber burning, then there will be minute molecules of rubber in your food, which is BAD for your immune system. If it's just burned chocolate, though, it is harmless unless you are allergic.

Burning odor, no heat

A burning smell along with a different sound (growl) USUALLY indicates a breakdown in the High Voltage Side. This is not a direct short (short circuit) or the line fuse would have blown shutting everything down. The High Voltage Side is made up of-- The Secondary ,or High Voltage Side of The High Voltage Transformer, A High Voltage Diode, A High Voltage Capacitor, and The Magnetron. If The High Voltage Transformer is the problem it will smell like a florescent light ballast burning, and will smell each time you turn on the MW. A HV Diode burns and opens, thus no more smell. A HV Capacitor usually does not burn nor does the Magnetron. There is no Cheap-Fix unless you can see that the HV Diode is burned into and you can get to it to replace. CAUTION: Always unplug from power before attempting to repair. NOTE: If you replace a Diode make sure it goes back in the same direction it came out. Yes there is a front and back.

Burning smell and light switch does not work

The controller needs to be repaired. We regularly repair these control board assemblies for only $32.50 nationwide, and that's much cheaper than replacing the board. For safety, disassembly and other info see http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk
