I can not boot up my computer

The hard drive or some other critical component may be failing, or just the OS or hard drive corrupted. If you have files that you do not want to lose, you could try this... Pull the hard drive out, and use a "USB Hard Drive Adapter" (available fairly cheap online) to connect the hard drive to a friend's computer, and save all the personal files (documents, pictures, etc.) you can to a folder on the friend's computer or an external hard drive. That way, at least you may not lose your files.
Then, you could try to do a Factory Restore or Reload on the computer, and if that works, copy your personal files back to your newly restored computer.
Your manual, available here, explains your Restore options... http://www.manualslib.com/manual/253469/Gateway-710xl.html#product-LX6810-01 - LX - 8 GB RAM

Back up whatever folders you have that don't want to loose on your computer. Your hard drive is failing and needs to be replaced.

Sorry I could not give better news.

I assume your new computer has IDE controller on the motherboard.
Yes you can install your old hard drive into your new computer as a Slave hard drive.
If the old hard drive is installed on the 2nd IDE controller and it is the only device on the controller then the jumper and be master or slave, but connect the hard drive at the last connector on the IDE cable.

Installed new hard drive (old one crashed) no sound now

You need another sound system. If it's xp it is probably ac 97. However; go to windows update, make sure you have all of the updates. Then go to the control panel, device manager and look for a yellow question mark or a yellow exclamation mark, if there, right click and click update driver or click uninstall from the system, restart the computer and windows will look for the drivers, just follow on screen directions.

After formatting my pc is unable to run

(1)When you power up the computer press F8 key thne if you are able to see safe mode and other menu then enter in safe mode. Then go to start menu->run type in run "chkdsk /r"
thne press "y" then scan your computer with antivirus. uninstall that antivirus because sometimes it conflict to windows.
then restart computer thne wait untill it check disk and fix errors.
Then you can see desktop screen.
(2)But if you are not able to enter in safe mode then you need windows disk or recovery disk.
Then boot computer with that disk.
For that when you power up the computer press F1 or F2 or "del" key to enter in bios .
Then go to boot option and set frist boot device as your cd or dvd drive.
Then save and exit settings.
Then insert disk in rom then it boot with that disk.
then follow the procedure and enter in recovery console .
Type in console prompt "chkdsk /r"
the press "y"
then it fix error on disk.
Then check in normal mode if still not load windows then follow above procedure again but this time select repair previous windows option so it repairs old windows and you get your old windows .
Let me know if you need further assistance.,
Thanks

Error when loading windows

Your shredder may have deleted the MBR (see http://www.geocities.com/thestarman3/asm/mbr/BootToolsRefs.htm for repair tools)
Also the disk partitions may not be recovered by your cd so they will have to be reinstated using PartitionMagic or, if you know how to use it, fdisk in c:\windows\command
Check your disk controller settings and drive types in the setup screen available before booting.
The software is unable to read/write to the drives possibly because of a drive type error or the type of interface selected for the controller in setup.
ATA33 drives have problems on ATA66 settings etc....
If your motherboard was failing it would not correctly select the drive types at boot. It would report

DRIVE C: <none>
and u would get a boot failure.
If you got as far as the setup for your recovery CD I would be surprised if the motherboard was failing.
Swap your DVD to the old Drive cable and try to boot from it. If the controller on the motherboard is bad it wont boot.
Check your cables for damage too..
Hope this helps

Master hard disk s,m,a.r.t.status bad, backup and replace

A failure message from the SMART system of this nature indicates that a catastrophic hard drive failure could be imminent. Without delay, back up ANY data you want to keep. This error isn't going to go away, and is being reported by the drive controller.

Whilever you can access the drive, move any data you want onto another media (such as DVD or external USB hard drive) because chances are it's not going to work much longer. You need to look at buying a new hard drive as soon as you possibly can, and migrating the data to it.

Files and Settings Transfer Wizard will be able to backup your data to another media.
