Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

I have a Compaq Prosignia desktop computer. Someone in our family entered a password and now does not know what he entered. I would like to use the computer (as old as it is) but cannot get into it. When I power it up the screen asks for a Power On Password Key (that we do not know). Is there any way we can use this computer again?

Well, for desktop, the best solution is to play around with the Bios Battery. Turn off the System and unplug the display cable and power cord. Open the case (Only one side will be enough), look for a small battery, remove it using a screw driver by pushing the lever. The Cmos Bios Battery looks likes this;

Push the lever on the right side, remove it and leave it for few minutes (at least minutes).

Again install it and reboot your system, it'll work fine without asking you to enter the password.

If in case the problem persists, please let me know so that I can assist you further.

Good luck.

Thanks for using FixYa.

Thanks, I changed the biobattery while I was at it and the computer is up and running. Now I am at the Windows screen (Windows XP) that is asking for my son's password. He does not know what it is. How can I reset the password or just eliminate it?

Hmmmm.. you've an interesting System and I wonder why everyone's forgotten the passwords. Ok, let's try this, on the Logon Screen, click your mouse on the blank blue space (don't highlight anything), then Press and hold Ctrl+Alt and press Delete key twice or several times, a small login box will pop up, type "Administrator" (without quotes) on the username and press enter without entering the password.[If you are on the classic logon menu, you don't need to press those keys, just type in the username as adminstrator] If the system wasn't set administrator's password or removed recently, you'll be able to login without the password. If this doesn't work, that'd be more difficult to access the system without formatting or using third party software.

After you are logged-in as "Administrator", right click on "My Computer", select "Manage" and expand the "Local users and Groups" click on the "Users" and on the right pane right-click on your son's username and select "Set Password" or "Reset Password" and set a new password. Now you can log off the from the administrator's account and login with your son's account name using the new password.

Let me know if this isn't possible.

    Good luck.

    Thanks for using FixYa.

When I turn on my Prosignia 144 it goes straight to a screen that says Compaq. Is it just doing that because it needs to charge or is it broken?

This is usually the post boot screen, most pc's/laptops show this before booting up, if its not going any futher then you may have a damaged instalation or just a damaged MBR.
If you google MBR fix you should have a good idea what you need to do

Power-on password forgotten! How can the computer be started?

The Power on Password is set from the BIOS configuration. Ask that person who borrowed your Compaq for the password. Once you have this password, you can enter the BIOS configuration and remove/disable this password.
Depending how old you Compaq is, removing the BIOS battery and main battery for 15+ mins may remove this password and restore the BIOS to the factory default (insert both batteries again) and configure the BIOS Date and Time etc.
BUT if the the password is stored on an EEPROM chip then removing will not fix this problem. There are no backdoor passwords available.

I was given a compaq computer running Windows XP. It boots up to a previous user and is looking for that user's password. How can I reset password or access administrator account?

I would suggest you to try the following :

Boot the computer in safe mode.
Press F8 while booting the system, It will give you Windows Advance boot option, Select Safe mode and press Enter. You will see two accounts, Administrator and the Previous User's . Select the Administrator. If it allows you to log in, go to control Panel, User Accounts and delete the previous user's account and create a New user with your name. Reboot the computer in normal mode.

Hope this works. Please let me know if you need further Assistance. Your comments and ratings are highly appreciated.
